5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent value!
My 3 yr old boy just received this for his b-day. I was a little concerned re: it's size being to small (short use span) for him, but I do not believe that this will be the case at all. I also have a 4 yr old boy which rides this bike comfortably. The bike is rock solid (it is fairly heavy) and the quality seems well above average. Despite the bike being only a 10" model,...

1.0 out of 5 stars NO BRAKES?!?!?!?!?!?
Okay... I have to admit that this is an adorable little bike. When my son received it for Christmas I don't know who was more excited! Then I proceeded to assemble it and noticed a 'warning' on the side of the box... "No Brakes".

Correct me if I'm wrong here but I thought the whole point of getting a bike with training wheels was to actually 'teach' a child how to...

Despite the bike being only a 10" model, I think it will suit the average 2 1/2 - 5 yr old fine. There is ample room to elevate both the seat and handle bars. The solid rubber tires and solid rubber training wheels (the latter both have contact with the ground at all times along with the rear wheel--no tippy wobbles!) provide a smooth and quiet glide. The bell has that fun classic ring! The seat has nice padding. The bike has a good bikechain/pantleg guard. There is NO BRAKING function on this model. I think that this bike would be a good alternative to buying both a tricycle and a small two-wheeler like this. I wish I had realized this before already buying two tricycles! For those of you contemplating a tricycle still, the Kiddio Supertrike 4 can not be beat-the quality is outstanding! (I wrote a review for that trike on June 20, 2002.)

5.0 out of 5 stars This bike is BEAUTIFUL!, November 29, 2001

If you know from experience with the tricycle that the first bike is constantly going to be left in sight, this is the bike for you! It is gorgeous! Left in the hall, it looks like a piece of retro installation art, but once it hits the sidewalk, VROOOOM! The only concern I have is the weight; my son (just turned three) seems to have to work harder to go uphill than his friends, but hey, he'll end up with cuter legs. He loves the bell, and gets excited if the neighbor's cat is in his way so he can ring it - poor cat. A great bike if you want to have a bike to hand-me-down to subsequent children without having to worry about gender, too. Although I bought this for my son, I would just as easily have puchased it for a girl - it's just a classic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Bike!, July 31, 2002

This is a great bike for a little one. My son just turned two and is riding it everywhere. Because it is small and a bike he has an easier time reaching the pedals than on a tricycle where the pedals are on the wheel. He has a tricycle at his grandmother's house but can ride this much better. The tricycle seems to tip over easily. He has only tipped this over once. Since he is two we have the seat on the lowest setting. It was still just a little too tall so we removed the red plastic piece from under the seat and it's a perfect fit. With the seat being adjustable he will be able to ride this for quite awhile. He also loves that it's just like all the other big kids bikes in the neighborhood.

Our three year old was able to jump right on this and GO. It makes her feel like a big kid. It is very stable and looks great on the front porch in our retro neighborhood. On the down side--it has no brakes. For us, that's fine. Like a trike, it is only used in the park and on our front walk.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great First Bicycle for my Four Year Old...., June 15, 2002

My son loves riding his 10" Radio Flyer! It has proven to be a 'great first bicycle' for him. I am pleased with the durability of the bicycle. In addition to the durability, it is sturdy & very well built. It is especially nice for my son who is a little physically delayed. He feels very comfortable on it & this 10" Radio Flyer serves as a wonderful transitional bike (i.e. from tricycle to bicycle). Parents may want to note that this bike does not have brakes. Parents just need to be mindful of this.

All in all, we look forward to enjoying many hours of fun on his Radio Flyer!

Okay... I have to admit that this is an adorable little bike. When my son received it for Christmas I don't know who was more excited! Then I proceeded to assemble it and noticed a 'warning' on the side of the box... "No Brakes".

Correct me if I'm wrong here but I thought the whole point of getting a bike with training wheels was to actually 'teach' a child how to ride a bike. Sure the 10" Radio Flyer may be good for the first 3 months but what happens when your little one 'gets up to speed'? They'll be crashing into everything. Meaning the bike, at best, will be limited to backyard use only. Our intent was to go for strolls around our block... and we live in a very quiet neighborhood with little traffic. Still, I wouldn't trust going around the block knowing my little one couldn't stop on his own if he had to or, God forbid, mommy was a step or two behind and not able to 'grab' him quick enough!

For $...I'd recommend going with a bike that has brakes so that parents and/or caregivers can seize 'teachable moments' (like, stop or you'll crash into the house!).

Bummer... I expected more from Radio Flyer.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWSOME 1ST bike for 2 year old!, March 13, 2005

We got this 10" bike for our son for Christmas when he was 20 months old. It only took a couple days of practice and he was whizzing all over the place in it. We chose this over the tricycle because when we tested them out in the store, the 10" with training wheels was much easier for him to control. All the bikes with the pedals attached to the wheel seemed to be more difficult to pedal. We also love the fact that instead of brakes, the bike pedals backward. Our son quickly learned how to manouver out of tight spots buy pedaling backward then forward again without ever having to get off the bike. When he is a bit older we will probably buy him a bike with brakes, but for a little guy who isn't out riding in the street alone, this bike is perfect.

We had to leave off the red plastic piece under the seat for him to be able to reach the pedals at first. That made the height just perfect. He is now almost 3 years old and still LOVES this bike. We have adjusted the height a couple times since he got it and lifted the training wheels a bit so he can start learning to balance without them.

The only thing on this bike that has broken in the 15 months we've had it is the bell. It broke after about 8 months of hard play. That's okay though. We didn't buy the bike for the bell.

All in all, this is THE BEST CHOICE when buying a child their first bike. It's not only a beautiful bike, but it is very durable and SUPER-EASY for little ones to ride. I recommend this for any little BOY or GIRL as their first bike.

We found that the pedals on most trikes are too far from the seat, and other little bikes have pedals on the front wheel which are hard to reach and which turn the wheel left and right when the child pedals. My daughter used this bike at 2 1/2 but we still had to push her a little bit. Although the bike *is* heavy, I think the problem was more in her coordination because early in the second summer she used it, one week it "clicked" and she just took off on it. She rode it everywhere the summer that she was 3 1/2. We have a fairly sloped driveway and by pushing the pedals backwards she could stop the bike at the bottom. (Also enjoyed making it go backwards.) She has a little brother and I love that he will be able to use this bike next, because it is gender neutral.

Also worth noting: we ran over one training wheel with the car and the company replaced it for just $3.50 including shipping.

We bought this bike for our son a year ago, for his third birthday. I liked that it was a nice small size and the look was gender neutral and gorgeous. However, we have been very disappointed with the bike's performance. It is just so HEAVY. My son has a really hard time getting going on it and going uphill just doesn't seem to work for him on this bike. One mistake that I won't make again is trying to surprise him with the bike and not trying it out ahead of time in the store. We will soon buy him a new bike and this time will take him to a real bike shop to be fitted and to try out the bike.
