5.0 out of 5 stars UNCUT FUNKACLUBALICIOUS: THE BOMB!!!, November 17, 2008
This review is from: Radio Free DC (Audio CD)
Fort Knox Five's Radio Free DC brings together sounds from more than 30 years of funk, hip-hop, acid jazz, reggae and Bambataa's "Perfect Beats". I'm a recovering DJ and mixtape addict, and I've been in search of the perfect mix for over 25 years. Radio Free DC captures all of my musical tastes on one CD and comes as close to the Perfect Mix as possible. If you like funky club music, you will love this CD. This CD and FK5's "Get This Party Started Right" mix are two of the best party mixes that I've ever heard!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid DC Mid-tempo breaks..., January 12, 2009

Having already purchased most of FK5's vinyl releases, I was pleased to see that this was not simply a collection of singles, but a proper LP. Fans of FK5 will immediately recognize their funky-breaks sound and compressed drums. The Sleepy Wonder tracks provided a nice dancehall departure from the usual FK5 vocals, although Mustafa Akbar holds it down on at least 4 tracks as well. Recommended for fans of Jalapeno Records, David Holmes, ESL Music, etc. You could leave disc this on repeat at a party and nobody would complain...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fort Knox FUNK, March 11, 2009

These guys have it all! This CD contains elements of 70's funk, rockin' hip-hop, and even reggae. I think their sound is somewhat similar to fellow DC-ers Thievery Corporation - without the downtempo tunes. FK5 uses some of the same musical guests that TC does: Sleepy Wonder, Zeebo & Rootz. This CD has it all, it is one of those where you do not need to hit fast forward, you will enjoy each of the tracks. Dope!

Maybe once upon a time musically East was East and West and West, but that
was once upon a time. In our time we have Radio Free DC, inter alia, to attest
to the fruits of cultural cross-fertilization. Radio Free DC is music for our global-
ized time. Enjoy and meditate.
