More About the Author

My career has been devoted almost entirely to foreign affairs, beginning in 1952 when I helped to set up Radio Liberty in Germany. I stayed with RL for 20 years, moving from Munich to Paris to New York. In 1972 I became head of Soviet and East European research at the U.S. Information Agency, and in 1976 moved to the U.S. Board for International Broadcasting as Planning and Research Officer.
During my career I began to specialize increasingly in Central Asian affairs, culminating in my book "Nationalism in Uzbekistan." I have also published a memoir of my Radio Liberty days, "Radio Liberty/Radio Hole-in-the-Head." My printed work includes scores of articles in U.S. and U.K. journals.
