The best solo effort by Roger Waters,
By
This review is from: Radio K.A.O.S. (Audio CD)
Not only the best solo effort as in hits, style, production and lyrical content but quality of a Japanese produced compact disc!It seems that North American music industry is lame when it comes to mass production of music such as this one. I have owned the original for years since it came out and definitely notice the quality difference between Japanese and North American. Although it seems Roger has such a eclectic musical artistic taste this CD/album is the most "listenable" and easy to grasp. I believe this is a must for all Roger Water fans as well as Pink Floyd fans alike.

Roger's finest solo album gets a sonic upgrade from "the powers that be"....,

I have really liked this album ever since it was first released. Even though this album is quickly dismissed by many Pink Floyd fans (and probably Roger himself), I think this was a very nice change from the quieter, sadder albums that Roger had done toward the end of Pink Floyd and at the beginning of his solo career. It seemed like Roger was really trying to be more accessible to his fans at this point, and I for one enjoyed it. A couple of the songs do sound a bit dated after all these years (as many of Roger's topical songs tend to do), but overall this album has held up pretty well (in my opinion). My favorite tunes from the album are "The Powers That Be" (featuring Paul Carrack), and "Home", but all of the tunes are very good. The IMPORT remastered version is a welcome change to the original Columbia Records CD from the 80's, and the new version sounds great! If you are a fan of Roger Waters, and/or Pink Floyd, I think you will like this album if you give it a chance. But make sure you buy the IMPORT/REMASTERED version, the sound is much better!

Admittedly, this album is cheezy. However, the subject matter, concerning the politics of the time period from which it was birthed; is spot-on. I personally love the tune Home and believe it still rings a loud bell 20 yrs after the fact. While the Russians may be gone, it appears that the powers that be are still up to the same old %* and this recording is a reminder of that.

This album is Waters best solo effort. I'm waiting for the deluxe 11 track version.

Waters's best solo work....,
This review is from: Radio K.A.O.S. (Audio CD)
I like Roger Waters's solo work a lot, even though his solo work wasn't as good as his Floyd recordings. This is my favorite of his solo albums, a tight, surprisingly uplifting concept album. The production is a little cheesy (it was made in 1987, and there are many annoying synthesizer lines), but overall it's very well written and made. I especially like Radio Waves, Who Needs Information (the most powerful song on the album), and the haunting closer, The Tide is Turning (after Live Aid). This album was released the same year as Pink Floyd's A Momentary Lapse of Reason, and this is the better one. KAOS didn't sell as well as Momentary, not even close, but I would still listen to this one over Momentary anyday. This is Waters's best solo album, and one that probably would have been a great Floyd album.

Post-megatourband concept album that exceeds its composer's pedigree. Turn on, tune in, think out...side the box. More fun than a barrel of Gibbons apes, with some parapolitical boost and panparanoia thrown in for good measure. Its only possible drawback is its fixed space in time: if you weren't around in the late '80s, there are going to be lyrical references aplenty that'll leave you scratching your head or googling for the conclusion. Still, it turns me on.

It grew on me....,

When I first heard this album, I didn't really like it. It took a few listenings until it grew on me. It's not as good as his other solo efforts but it is on par with the post-Waters Floyd stuff. The subject matter is pretty dated as there is no longer a Cold War and we don't live under the threat of nuclear annhilation from the Russians, but some of the other stuff is timely (The Powers that Be especially). I really like the stuff that would have been on the other side of the album though (from Sunset Strip to the Tide is Turning). My only main complaint on this one is that he never did his followup album with stuff that appears in the concert but doesn't make it on this CD (Molly's Song, Going to Live in LA, Get Back to Radio). Those songs complete this album a little more.

Originally released June 1987, on EMI in the UK, Eire, and EEC. This is his first album after leaving the Floyd, but it'd be better if he'd go back. He couldn't compete with the rest of the group later that year.
