The Best Defense of Catholicism in Print,
By Historian (Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Radio Replies: Three Volume Set (Paperback)
The 3 volumes of Radio Replies is indeed the best refutation of arguments against the Catholic faith that one can find. These books are comprised of answers to 4,374 questions about anything imaginable in the Catholic faith. The questions are answered in pristine logic, but they are also answered with a good degree of charity. As a Catholic, these are a must have for your library whether you are devoutly religious or a lapsed member who is finding his way back to the Church. Even if you are Protestant or Orthodox, you will find much in these volumes that you will treasure. While learning more about how and why the Church in Rome is Christ's visible institution on earth, you will be able to answer the attacks of Christianity's common enemies comprising of atheists, agnostics, rationalists, and modernists. The books are well indexed and are broken down into chapters like "The Religion of the Bible", "A Definite Christian Faith", and "The Failure of Protestantism". The scope and the amount of information of these books is truly staggering. These books contain an introduction from author Rev. Charles Carty, a forward by author Rev. Dr. Leslie Rumble, and an inspiring preface by the famous Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen, DD. For the reader more interested in specifics, the volumes are imprimatur His Excellency Fr. John Gregory Murray, Archbishop of St. Paul, Minnesota in 1938. Don't worry about how old these books are. The arguments are no less sound than they were 62 years ago. As the book states, these books have a wide circulation at retreats and missions, and are, "invaluable for the uninformed Catholic-the educated and uneducated lapsed Catholic and Prospective Convert." I would really like to be more specific about what these books contain, but since they contain almost EVERYTHING, I just can't narrow it down. If you are interested in purchasing a book/s about Catholic doctrine and/or apologetics and can only afford one, I definitely recommend that you end your search and purchase Radio Replies. Good luck to all, and God Bless.

While these volumes are now online, I love having them in print because I can't read for long periods of time in an electronic format. These books are great for every day real questions that people ask about the Catholic Church, from the most common to the most absurd. The two fathers always answer in a frank and honest manner - they do not mince words, but they are charitable. Well in the top 100 Catholic books.

These books are probably the best resource available for someone wishing to learn about Catholicism and faith in general. The authors respond to the toughest questions posed by Protestants, Agnostics, Atheists, and other non-Catholics. The answers are simple, brief, and logical. The only downfall is the fact that they pre-date the Vatican II council; otherwise this set captures the faith quite well, and is indexed by topic. If you are a Catholic looking to expand your knowledge of your religion, or are questioning the beliefs of the Church, I challenge you to read these books. Also, I challenge any Protestant to read the responses of the authors on any doctrine you find difficulty believing. Every question has a strong and complete answer. These books are a must-have!

Fast answers to all major common questions!,

This review is from: Radio Replies: Three Volume Set (Paperback)
This 3-volume set is a MUST-HAVE, especially if you're facing the common objections and questions regarding the Catholic Faith from the usual quarters: Protestants, atheists, etc. Clear, precise and concise answers with relevant analogies are presented to tackle all sorts of questions. For those who have never faced objections, these volumes prepare you for the real world.
For more portable answer booklets categorized by subject matter, check out the authors' "quiz" booklets, available from the same TAN publisher. Good also for those non-Catholics who want to know how 2 knowledgeable Catholic priests can answer questions on the Faith. Very few other books out there can explain the Faith so simply and yet clearly. While most other books are written for an "internal" Catholic audience who presumably know the basics of belief, this compilation of real-world Q&A/F&Q examples were originally presented to a non-Catholic audience. This fact alone serves 2 twin crowds regardless of whether or not you already know anything about Catholicism. As such, this book is very helpful to the seeker of answers. Highly recommended resource with excellent, comprehensive indexing!

They Got Guts!,

Fathers Rumble and Carty never mince words in answering any and all questions thrown at them on the subject of Catholicism, Christianity, Faith in general and even philosophy. They answer with wit, humor, accuracy, charity and crystal clear learning. Direct to the point, their authoritative replies stand their ground so well. Many of the questions and comments are stuff I wanted to ask myself but didn't have the chance, and here I found penetrating, convicting answers to many of those questions. For example: "...the religious are hypocrites. They go to church yet they sin. I follow no religion but respect my fellow men and obey the laws. That's enough, I don't need a god" something to this effect.
An excerpt of the fathers' reply goes like this... "the man who performs his duties to his fellow man but reject his duties to God is like a man who goes to the baker and thanks and pays him (the baker) for the bread that he (the buyer) puts into his body but ignores the God who gave him the body where he puts the bread into. He pays the lesser debt but ignores that much greater debt!" Now before this portion, previous answers have established the reality of God and our duties to Him. This is also one of the best attributes of the books: all subjects are arranged by topic and many Q and A's are so ordered such that they build up on the ones before it, as needed. A majority of the replies are short but never lacking in substance. In Volume 1 alone more than 1400 questions have been answered providing hours of exciting reading. If there is one "negative thing" about these volumes I would say that they could have used a better font. Just because this is a 1930's original publication you had to read the same font style in 2011. Not that it is bad but it would be loads better had they used a much modern font. In some portions, the letterings appeared to fade. Also note that this is a pre-Vatican II publication and as such, the tone of the books might be a bit more polemical for those who expect a more conciliar tone. Just bear in mind that this 3-volume set were written as a defense of the position of the Catholic Church against many attacks in those times. These volumes go well with the Roman Catechism- The Catechism of the the Council of Trent which also posses a direct to the point, clear and authoritative defense of Catholic Faith and Doctrines. Both are highly recommended! Thanks be to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the service of Fathers Rumble and Carty (and many more like them)!

This book is very well written. It is a well organized collection of a transcript of years of a call-in style radio show. I found the series a wealth of knowledge! Thank you to the Fathers who collected and provided the expert information within.
