Great "live" album and fun extra disk, December 31, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Radio Waves (Audio CD)
Although this is technically a "live" record, the fact that it was recorded during radio broadcasts gives it a very polished studio feeling, blending the best of both worlds. It contains all the classic Aquavelvet hits (a good starting place for you first time Velvet-heads). The extra disk is a great addition too. It includes a very cool version of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." You gotta here this surf version of the grunge classic to believe it. That song alone is worth the price of admission!

Miles Corbin does it again, January 17, 2003
This review is from: Radio Waves (Audio CD)
Thre are a lot of "new" surf bands out there, mostly ones who have been on the fringes of the industry but have no way in. After all, which major or large indie label is going to record and push INSTRUMENTAL music? None of them. Confounding this stupidity with his guitar artistry comes Miles Corbin, leading The Aqua Velvets and playing simply the finest, cleanest, least overdone/played modern surf music of any band. No "nostalgic" stuff here just to establish context; Miles and the guys just play it, and play it damned well. His instrumental take on Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" never fails to get the ear of people for whom I have played this CD. I had the great good luck to be able to see the Aqua Velvets play live in June of '02, and I can confirm that they are just as artistic and powerful in the flesh as this wonderful CD makes them sound. Buy this CD immediately along with "Guitar Noir" and float away to a surfin' day like you've never had.If you need to define "Stratocaster Music", this is IT.

Cowabunga! Surfin' and great musicians too, September 24, 2002

So, you're asking yourself, "Am I going to like this CD?" Easy test:
If you have another AV CD and liked it, then there can't really be any doubt, no you won't like this one, you'll love it.
If you like surf music and/or instrumental rock, then yes, you're gonna like this one.
If you like upbeat music done by excellent musicians who are clearly having a really great time, then you'll love it.
None of the above? Hmmm... maybe you should check your pulse... well there's still a good chance you'll like this. Yes it's that good.
I can't figure out why these guys haven't gotten some national exposure. They're easily as good as any of the "competition" in the surf/instrumental rock scene. They'll get tossed in the surf group bunch -- and they can do that with the best of them. But they're a lot more than that! These guys can rock with the best of 'em but they can also lay back and string out some really mellow music. Complex rhythms? no sweat. Lay a little blues/jazz in there, okay. If there's any doubt at this point, I really like this group and the music. Amazing stuff just flows out of the speakers when this CD is on. Quit reading, just buy it and enjoy!
