Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8?Three solid series entries. Eye-catchingly formatted, each volume outlines the subject's history. Most of the seven chapters in each book are interrupted by a two-page biography of an influential scientist. "Amazing Facts" boxes are balanced with plenty of captioned black-and-white and full-color photographs, encouraging browsers with scientific teasers and trivia. The topics are presented in an interesting and readable style. Holland explains the structure of the uranium atom, diagrams different types of reactors, compares other energy forms, and examines the pros and cons of using nuclear energy. Wells focuses on scientists' efforts in gene mapping, their race to be first in discoveries, and how they create new strains of animals and plants. Ethical dilemmas are mentioned, but are not examined in depth. Winkler's book is for a slightly younger audience than the other two volumes. It chronicles the effects of too many x-rays on tissue, how x-rays are made, their use in diagnosis and treatment, and other medical imaging such as ultrasound and MRIs. Good for both reports or general interest, these titles should get heavy use in both school and public libraries.?Shannon VanHemert, Memphis/Shelby County Public Library, TN
