5.0 out of 5 stars Packed with features, but not impossibly overwhelming December 12, 2010
Format:CD-ROM
I'm not an avid cook. I don't even play one on TV. I'm just a girl who has a hard time with meal planning.

This program seems to have everything you could ever want in recipe (and kitchen) management. Sometimes having so many features makes a product difficult to learn and use right of the box, but that's not the case here. I expect it will take me time to learn and use all the features of this software--and honestly, it's hard for me to imagine myself EVER being that organized. But it's easy and intuitive, and I had no trouble jumping in and planning menus and making grocery lists right away.

My favorite thing about the Living Cookbook is its recipe capture function. With so many great cooks all over the internet, being able to copy, paste, and reformat posted recipes into my own cookbook, quickly and easily, is fantastic. If you're one to try out recipes from cooking sites and food blogs, I highly recommend downloading the free trial of this software from their website and trying it out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Things to know before you buy April 10, 2011
Format:CD-ROM|Verified Purchase
I purchased Living Cookbook 2011 about 1 month ago after updating to Windows 7. Prior to this, I was a long time user of MasterCook. There are some good and not so good things about Living Cookbook (LC) you should consider before making the purchase. Here are the pros and cons.

Pros: It is very easy to import recipes, including pictures/images, from the web into LC. Color coding the text you have moved is a nice feature. The recipe organizer is also easy to use; you can sort by recipe, category, source, etc. by clicking the heading of the column. Entry of recipe information is pretty straight forward, except "Procedure" (directions) information disappears after you have entered more that one line of text. You need to hit enter before it reappears.

Cons: If you are interested in the nutrition information of your recipes, this may not be the software for you. You will need to check every ingredient in your recipe to review the ingredient LC chose for your entry and the unit used (cup, tsp., etc.), especially the first time you enter the ingredient. For example, LC chose baby food for my baby spinach entry and cheddar cheese soup for grated cheddar cheese. It does not recognize sea scallops--you have to know that they are mollusks to search for scallops in the ingredient list. A packaged commercial product is usually selected by LC rather than a raw or whole product. It appears that LC developers simply imported nutrition info. and didn't bother to put it into ingredient names and units used in most cookbooks and by most cooks. Units are based on 100 grams.

Also, it is a twelve step process to print a recipe on an Avery 3x5 index card (per instructions received from LC customer service).

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly Perfect... January 5, 2011
By Suzy
Format:CD-ROM|Verified Purchase
I purchased this for my brother as a Christmas gift because he's always talking about making a family cookbook and, after reading the reviews, this looked like the best choice. When I discovered on Christmas morning that he already owned the software (he'd also read the reviews), I decided to keep it myself and try it out.

For something I didn't really think I needed, it turns out I really like this. A LOT.

Most of my recipes are on-line. I've been using recipezaar (now food.com) for the last ten years or so. In addition, I have a vast collection of cookbooks, as well as cooking magazines that I frequently turn to. I also have huge bulging binders full of recipes.

With this software, I'm finally compiling the recipes I actually USE, which is far different from how many recipes I have. I love the fact that I can organize the recipes in a way that actually makes them easy to find. Now they will be in ONE PLACE. Love it!

Note: If you're using this software to capture internet recipes, it's a fairly intuitive process but takes time (if you're like me) and have hundreds to capture. One of the best tricks I found is to download recipefox (it's free and works with the firefox browser). Makes transferring internet recipes into Living Cookbook super easy. The reason I'm giving the software 4 stars instead of 5 is that this software (and updates) should be standard with the software.

3.0 out of 5 stars Want to like it, but does not suit my purposes January 2, 2011
By WBMOM
Format:CD-ROM|Verified Purchase
I am an avid cook with a both a huge cookbook collection as well as seven organized binders filled with my favorite recipes by category. I also do weekly menu planning for my family pulling from these resources. When I saw this software, I thought it would be the perfect marriage of the two with other custom features like nutritional information and auto-scaling that I could use as well.
The installation was easy, but I was surprised to find hundreds of preloaded recipes from various self-promoting resources (pork council, avocado council, etc.) that I didn't want on my index. I had to delete all of these and then began the process of importing my own. This is where I have my issues. It's not the easy process that the description makes it out to be. The ones I scanned were fine, but the ones I tried to pull over from internet resources did not work most of the time.
This software could use some simplification (too many features for my purposes)and they need to work on making it easier to resource from the internet. I will update if I find that it improves, but for now I am disappointed.
