Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Real-Life Reader Biographies present the lives of contemporary role models for young readers. These are the stories of real men and women who, despite many obstacles, followed their dreams. They are great for elementary-level research and reports and are fun to read, too. The story of Rafael Palmeiro is based on author Barbara Marvis's personal interviews with Rafael. Many photographs in the text were sent to the publisher by Rafael and his family. He has reviewed and approved this story for print.

From the Back Cover

On opening day in Baltimore in April 1994, Rafael Palmeiro received big cheers from the crowd when he was introduced. Then, in the seventh inning against Kansas City, Rafael hit a home run. All his fans were standing and cheering. Rafael circled the bases. When he got home, the fans were still cheering. Rafael had to go to the top steps of the dugout and wave his hat at the crowd.

Rafael has come a long way from his homeland in Cuba. He still remembers when he came to the United States. He was seven years old and spoke only Spanish. He didn't understand any English. He had to learn the language. It was hard. But Rafael was determined--not only to make a life for himself in America, but to make the best one.
