Rage Against the Machine XX-20th Anniversary

Biography

Rage Against the Machine earned acclaim from disenfranchised fans (and not insignificant derision from critics) for their bombastic, fiercely polemical music, which brewed sloganeering leftist rants against corporate America, cultural imperialism, and government oppression into a Molotov cocktail of punk, hip-hop, and thrash. Rage formed in Los Angeles in the early '90s out of the wreckage ... Read more in Amazon's Rage Against The Machine Store

Editorial Reviews

Formed in 1991, Rage Against the Machine opened the gates of a new boundary-obliterating rock-rap musical alliance with the band's literate and politically-charged debut album. Featuring band members Tim Commerford, Zack de la Rocha, Tom Morello and Brad Wilk, Rage Against the Machine became a critical and commercial success, selling millions of copies around the world while attaining legendary status among alt-rock fans. To this day the album, and the band, remain standard-bearers for uncompromising incendiary rock.

Newly remastered for this anniversary release, Rage Against the Machine - XX will be available as a CD in three configurations: 1) 20th Anniversary Edition Deluxe Box Set housing two CDs, two DVDs, one 12" 180gm vinyl LP, one 40 page booklet and two-sided poster; 2) 20th Anniversary Special Edition featuring two CDs and a bonus DVD featuring six tracks in an oversized softpack and 3) 20th Anniversary Edition single compact disc (with three bonus tracks).

Rage Against the Machine - XX (20th Anniversary Edition Deluxe Box Set)

CD 1 includes the original album, remastered, with 3 bonus tracks of collectible b-sides from era.

CD 2 presents the original Rage Against the Machine demo tape. Recorded in 1991 and sold for $5 at the merch table at early Rage shows, the tape achieved mythical word-of-mouth status amongst music fans while helping to seal the band's deal with Epic Records. The 20th anniversary releases of Rage Against the Machine - XX marks the first time the entire RATM demo tapes have seen a full official release.

DVD #1 features Rage Against the Machine's historic free concert in Finsbury Park on June 2010, performed as a thank-you to UK fans for making "Killing in the Name" the UK's Number One Single during Christmas week 2009. Also included is the band's groundbreaking music videos plus live concert performance clips, some of which are released for the first time ever.

DVD#2 takes you back to the release of Rage s debut album focusing on live performance from 1991-1994 and which features for the first time the full set of RATM's first public performance as well as various live clips.

Rage Against the Machine - XX includes new liner notes, penned especially for the band's 20th anniversary by longtime fan and hip-hop pioneer Chuck D.

5.0 out of 5 stars XX-THE ULTIMATE RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE EDITION December 14, 2012
Format:Audio CD
In 1992 Rage Against The Machine released their self-titled debut album which would go onto inspire and influence and entire generation of bands and people. Muse's guitar virtuoso Matt Bellamy has often said that seeing Rage Against The machine perform at the 1996 Reading Festival was the moment he knew he wanted to be in a band. It's an album full of powerful political themes provided by the rap vocals of Zack de la Rocha, incendiary riffs from the brilliant Tom Morello who makes the strangest sounds from his guitar, at times it can sound like a turntable as well as being backed by a powerful rhythm section of Bassist Tim Commerford and Drummer Brad Wilk. It is an album that has stood the test of time and was heavily influenced by the likes of Public Enemy, The Clash, the Beastie Boys as well as both Tom Morello and Tim Commerford having a love for Canadian Prog rockers Rush.

Twenty years on and the album gets the real deluxe treatment available in a variety of formats from a basic re-mastered edition to an ultimate 5 disc edition. It probably depends on the level that Rage mean to you as to which edition you want. If you are a collector it's the deluxe box set edition you will want. It's packed to the brim including of course the original album re-mastered as well as the vinyl version of the original album. Out of all the ten tracks on the album there is no filer from the opening track "Bombtrack" to the explosive climax of "Freedom" and everything in between including guest spots from Tool's Maynard James Keenan and Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins on the excellent "Know Your Enemy".

2.0 out of 5 stars Why the Remaster? March 10, 2013
By Bob O
Format:MP3 Music
Everything else aside, this was an album that apparently set a standard for how good production could be. So why exactly would you remaster it? It appears that Vlado Meller, infamous for his over-compressed and clipped mastering of Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Californication," remastered this album, and, judging by the waveforms, we now have a CD that's a victim of the loudness war... in 2012.

Long story short, if you buy this album, don't buy it for the remaster, and, if you have an older version of the CD, hang on to it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mic Check One, Two December 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Simply an amazing box set collection, 2 DVDs with concerts and music videos, a demo tape (which is quite frankly awesome!), a cool poster, a 40 page booklet, and the first RATM album released to be the public. For the price, you simply can't beat it, if you are a RATM fan.

Super high quality and it has everything. It's not bloated, it's exactly what it has it is, if you don't want a tone of amazing extras, buy the mp3s.

This is simply the remastered version of the already great album. The superior quality is obvious in higher end sound equipment.

5.0 out of 5 stars I won't do what you tell me! February 6, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
This entire album is the Bombtrack. If you're new to the RATM sound, this is the perfect way to dive in. This is one of those albums that you would think just came out, as it doesn't feel dated let alone 20 years old. The remaster is great, not a huge difference but just sounds cleaner, especially with a good set of headphones/buds. Highly recommend for your collection, and at the price point that I got it (2.99) it's silly not to pick it up!

Why is this listed under classic rock, nothing classic about it, I'll unless yelling, screaming, and lack of talent has somehow become classic rock! Read more

It's the re-release of their first album, which is great. The additional tracks are OK at best and really I could have done without. The DVD is weak with just a few live songs. Read more
