4.0 out of 5 stars Rage: 10 Things to Know November 30, 2011
Platform for Display:PC|Edition:Standard
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I recently completed id's Rage for the PC, so I decided to post a review of the game. Here are ten important things you need to know:

1. Gameplay - Simply put, Rage is fun. The controls feel smooth and natural as you progress through an exciting world of action and suspense. The gameplay is mostly linear, but there is enough variety to keep it interesting. Furthermore, the sidequests are fun, and they mesh well with the pace of the game. Rage doesn't push too many boundaries, but it doesn't feel like it needs to.

2. Graphics - The world of Rage is as rich and beautiful as a post-apocalyptic world can be. Up close, the textures appear slightly low-res, but that barely impacts the overall presentation. Minor texture popping is an issue, although it has mostly been remedied with recent updates.

3. Characters - The characters that live in Rage are vibrant and well-voiced, but they are ultimately unmemorable. Some blame is due to the fact that you never get to stay in one town for very long, but the primary fault is that there is no character development. The characters only exist to assign missions and provide atmosphere to the story and environment.

4. Plot - The recycled story is Rage's weakest feature. What exists is well-delivered, but it will leave you wanting more, especially after the game's anti-climatic conclusion. Plot voids may be acceptable in some action games, but Rage is designed to make the player crave something epic. This expectation ultimately leads to disappointment.

5. Multiplayer - Rage has two multiplayer modes, but neither is compelling, and deathmatch is completely absent. This omission is disappointing because Rage's weapons would have been exciting to experience competitively. Although id used to be the king of PC multiplayer, potential players should know that Rage is mostly a single-player experience.

6. Weapons and Items - Rage provides an assortment of weapons, items, and ammunition that greatly enhances the gameplay. Although many weapons seem familiar, some provide enough of a twist to make Rage unique. Unlike some first-person shooters, buying ammo seems essential, especially if you want the full impact of what the game has to offer.

7. Driving - Driving is a major aspect of Rage. It's required in order to progress the story and to safely travel, and it's a primary means to make money. Vehicle maintenance and acquisition is also required. Rage does a great job balancing these aspects and making them feel like a natural part of the game.

8. Enemies - Rage is populated with various factions of people, so you'll encounter a decent variety of foes that gradually increase in difficulty and complexity. The only disappointment is that the best, most impressive boss fight occurs early in the game, and there are few major encounters to look forward to after that.

9. Immersion - Despite its fantastic gameplay, Rage suffers from not being immersive enough. Overall, the environment feels decorative. There are way too many invisible walls, and there is very little to interact with or destroy. It's annoying when enemies use and drop weapons that cannot be picked up, and it's annoying to loot them just to get their cash and ammo.

10. Mini Games - Rage offers a small assortment of mini games including a card game that relies on your ability to find and collect the cards as you perform your missions. However, these games feel inconsequential as there are no rewards for playing them other than money and achievements, and money never feels scarce.

Conclusion
Rage provides an incomplete experience, and it will not be appreciated by players who demand depth in story. However, despite its flaws, there is a lot to love. Most importantly, Rage is fun! I recommend it for anyone who can appreciate an single-player action game for the entertainment it provides.

3.0 out of 5 stars BORDEROUT October 6, 2011
Platform for Display:PC|Edition:Standard
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Wargames. Wargames never change.

Welcome to the new post-apocalyptia. Our hero emerges into the world after been cocooned into the underground shelter known as the Vault - no, strike that: the Ark, the Ark! The year is 2029 and, following a near-extinction event (namely, the asteroid Apophis spiraling down Earth's gravity well) humanity has pealed back the last vestiges of our civilized facade. Small surviving communities fight to the death for the small pockets of land, shelter and water. They fight off brutal bandits, persistent mutants and each other.

SHOOT. LOOT. BARTER. UPGRADE. REPEAT UNTIL SATISFIED.
RAGE is a RolePlaying Shooter (RPS), although it plays much more like an FPS than an RPG. There is no leveling up and you have no real inventory. On the other hand, you get missions (apparently no one strained any creativity muscle to think those up), you keep what you kill, you sell the junk you do not need and upgrade whenever you can. There are schematics (buy them whenever you find them) that allow you to MacGyver gadgets and customized weapons out of found components.
The characters you meet are quirky and interesting whereas your enemies will react to your killing shot (strangely though, not to all the previous ones!).
All in all, the game is fun to play and although its replayability is not that high, it is a game well worth of your attention.

AS NEO HAS REPEATEDLY EXPLAINED, WE WILL NEED GUNS
And by "guns" I doubt he meant...WingSticks. These are what you'd get if you were to cross a boomerang with a Ninja-star: they may look good in action but I found them to be far less satisfying than a good shotgun. Do not be disheartened though. Every weapon is extremely beautifully designed and they come with up to four different type of ammo.
In Bioshock one could complete the entire game by first zapping the enemies and then finishing them off with the wrench. In RAGE you can do the same with electric ammo followed by some WingSticks. And, unlike BioShock, ammo is plentiful in RAGE.

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL WASTELAND OUT THERE (IF YOU CAN SEE IT)
I was one of the lucky ones because my gaming PC has a single nVidia video card and I am running in a 32bit WinXP environment. ATI cards, SLi stacks and 64bit systems are out of luck: the developer did not care enough to optimize the game for them! Hence the number of gamers complaining about this.
So, when they work, the graphics are gorgeous. More artistic than realistic and with great light/shadow transitions. Ever since the original Unreal I always notice the skies of a game and RAGE has beautiful cumulus and stratus clouds, through which the Sun scorches the Wastelands.
So, crack open a cold bottle of Kola-Kong, sit back and enjoy. (No, you do not need to keep the cap. Do I need to keep reminding you that this is not Fallout 3!).

HAVE BUGGY WILL TRAVEL. THE SLOW SHALL DIE.
After so many hours raking Pandora for that perfect Chimera pistol, it was inevitable that once I slipped into yet another sand buggy and start roaming desert vistas I would think of Borderlands. Buggies here are not only a means to travel but they can also be raced around tracks.
They are a good addition, the are fun to handle and they offer a nicely done racing component to a shooter game.

CAN YOU STOMACH THIS NEW WORLD?
The game comes with surprisingly modest hardware requirements for the eye candy it is. The biggest problem is the HDD space - it will hog ...25GB! For a game that is far from being...100-hours long that is on the excessive side. I had to uninstall no less than 4 games in order to fit this on my primary HDD.
Now, the rig I am running RAGE is a two years old Intel Core i7, with 3GB of RAM, nVidia 480GTX (updated to driver 280.26) on a MSI Eclipse running WinXP (SP3) - and it plays at a decent framerate but not free of frequent rendering and the occasional tearing. And this is where the game looses its first star: it is not finished.
Consoles are sold at cost and the companies make a profit by pricing console games higher. PC games are different. No one...subsidies our PC systems. So, if you are going to ask for 60$(!) for a PC game, it better be PC-optimized and polished to a shine. And when you think you are done, polish it some more.
Otherwise what exactly are you selling, the...promise of someday been able to play the game I pay at such a price?

FAST! SHOOT THE VALVE THAT CONTROLS THE STEAM.
Yes, RAGE comes with mandatory STEAM tie-in. This means two things. First, for the love of God, if you bought the game retail, activate, then kill the STEAM download, delete the local content that managed to slip through and finally reinstall from your disks. Do you really want to wait for 21.6GB to download?
Secondly, this means the $60-game is not yours to keep. You can play with it but you have to leave it in STEAM's playroom when done. You cannot resell it if you so decide and you cannot gift it if you get bored with it. I take a full star off for such DRM schemes; however, if this is not important to you, feel free to adjust my rating accordingly.

A FINAL BULLET.
Although not that original, RAGE incorporates a number of RPS ideas with gusto and style. Unfortunately, the game has not been polished yet, a number of graphical glitches persist even for nVidia systems. Game publishers should learn the value of respecting both their product and their paying customers.

My advice is to wait until the price matches the product.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does not live up to the hype... October 6, 2011
By Axle F.
Platform for Display:PC| Edition:Standard|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Well... It looks like this is another game that I fell for the hype on and is NOTHING like advertised.

This is a SINGLE PLAYER review.

This is a Fun, Short, game... Worth a rental on a console but not to be bought on a PC.

I beat the game in about 8 hours, so I played it all the way through. This is even after, and I use the term loosely "Exploring" and doing "Side missions."

It runs fine on my computer at the in-game locked rate of 60fps at 1920x1080 Resolution: A quad core 3.0ghz Intel chip, with an evga 790i ftw digital motherboard and a 460GTX Nvidia card running graphics and an Nvidia 9800gtx+ handling physics (when applicable). Windows 7 x64 ultimate, and 16gb of DDR3 1600 ram.

I'm going to break down how badly this game missed the mark by using the very lies that were in the description here on amazon...

"-Visceral 1st-person gunplay and exploration - Take on bandit gangs and hordes of mutants using an arsenal of exotic weapons and special items,
Such as wingsticks, personal turrets, sentry bots, and remote-controlled bomb cars." --- The gunplay was fun but most badguys take massive amounts of shots to finally go down and stay down, so most gun fights involve running backwards while reloading to take care of the last two badguys in a "horde." I wouldn't exactly call the amount of weapons in this game as being an "Arsenal" More like a "Few" projectile weapons and an okay amount of gadgets. And you cannot even pick up the weapons that the enemies drop, they just sort of "magically" vanish... Same thing happens with most baddies bodies, they just POOF. Though I have to admit that the enemy A.I. was pretty decent when compared to most FPS games out now.

"-Frenetic 3rd-person vehicular mayhem - Upgrade and customize your car with special parts, paint jobs and weapons." --- Again, the wrong use of words. I wouldn't call the vehicle combat "Frenetic" I'd call it more along the lines of a bunch of boring driving from point a to point b with a few moments of shooting and blowing up randomly appearing cars in obviously open areas. Though the car customization was very limited as you could choose, at most, two different paint schemes for each of the 4 cars and 1 ATV, it was still fun to upgrade and race. Though no matter how much you upgrade your vehicles, the other racers will always be able to match your speed or catch up (look up Rubber Band Racing A.I.), except in story races where they suddenly don't know how to drive.

****"-Graphics that have to be seen to be believed - Powered by id's cutting-edge new id Tech 5 engine, new Megatexture technology brings the vast wasteland to life in never-before- possible detail with action running at an astounding 60 frames per second."*** THIS IS WHERE THE GAME IS THE MOST DISAPPOINTING!! The graphics are, simply put, way out of date!! I mean, Read Dead Redemption on the Xbox 360 looks better than this, even Fallout new Vegas on PC without environment shadows still looks better than this game! I was led to believe that the whole new "id Tech 5 engine" was supposed to be all high tech and Next Gen... What a bunch of B.S.!! They don't even give you in game options for graphics other than Anti-Aliasing and screen resolution. There is no day or night cycle, the clouds don't move, I couldn't really tell how good the lighting was because it just seemed they would use massive amounts of bloom to emphasize bright light. Everything seems like it is out of focus or blurred, even looking at a big yellow and black Rail Road Crossing sign the RR and black line just seem, out of focus... Sort of like they were using 256bit map images for graphics instead of High Definition sized images. (it just seems this game was made purely for the outdated Xbox 360s DX9 system, or they didn't want to go to the trouble to use HD graphics) There is also this, annoying, "POP IN" of images and textures. If you suddenly look or spin left or right or up and down, the images and textures pop in a second later. There were just TOO MANY things going wrong here to make the game immersive.

***"-An expansive experience - Beyond the first-person action and vehicle combat, RAGE offers a world open to explore, with unique characters, side quests, and a compelling storyline."*** I absolutely HATE when companies label their games as "Open World" without knowing what that actually means. I don't know what their definition of "OPEN WORLD" is but it certainty wasn't GTA San Andreas, or Just Cause 2, Fallout 3, and New Vegas open world, or even on a lesser note, Fable style open world, though I would have to say this game seems to have a similar layout to fable, with less choice. I would call it a mostly linear corridor shooter with slightly open world driving areas and two different "City" areas. In almost all missions and areas you can only enter one way and exit another way, Point A to Point B kind of stuff. You cannot really walk up on a mountain and snipe at bad guys or sneak in from one way and avoid them or such, so don't buy this expecting Fallout or Deus Ex FPS choices. As for the story line... it ends WAY TOO SOON! The ending of the game feels more like it SHOULD HAVE BEEN the midway point, if that had been the case, then it would be getting a star or two more.

"-Three ways to play for unlimited action - Immerse yourself in a rich story-driven single-player experience, grab a friend for exclusive co-op modes, or go online for all-out multiplayer mayhem." I cannot attest to multi-player as I couldn't care less about multi-player games, and if I wanted a co-op post apocalyptic driving and shooting game I'd go for Borderlands, as it lasts MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, longer, and has infinite re-playability due to its unique weapons system. As stated above, there are just too many things going wrong to make this a truly "IMMERSIVE" game for me. Though I do have to give some credit to the facial animations and the top notch voice actors! But the game is just too short to really get me involved with its world.

I may update this if ID decides to upgrade or patch this game in the next few months to give PC gamers the game they were expecting, but until then, it's just another console port and quite forgettable after finishing it. No real re-playability for the single player. But it is still a fun game, even with all the flaws and hype let down.

---BOTTOM LINE----
This is not the big 5 star AAA game it was hyped up to be.
Again... It is a fun game on the first playthough... I just cannot recommend actually buying it for the PC at this time.
Rent it on a console, because it just isn't the type of game worth owning.
