This review is from: Rage in Ring (Audio CD)
Purchased years ago after seeing Wendy open for the Indigo Girls, this is a favorite in my collection of female singer/songwriters. This album has an intimate quality due to its soloist, acoustic voice. Although several songs include other instruments and voices, Wendy's voice stands out with an impassioned uniqueness. It's difficult to describe and bears no comparison. There is a gentle raspiness, a sweet vigor and shy bawdiness to it. Her lyrics are thoughtful and often funny. Some of my favorite lines are, "Down to the meat market select and display/lights are too low and the music's too loud you can't hear what they say/they say 'I'm an airline pilot and I drive me a red corvette'/then he looks at you all funny like you're supposed to be impressed" (For A Good Time) and also there's "Being just friends is like drinking water instead of wine, instead of wine." The harmonies are subtle and haunting especially in "It's Cold Out Here" and "Your Very Own Car." I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys acoustic music, unique female vocals and thoughtful as well as amusing lyrics.
