I Finally Know What to Call It,
By Steven Lance "writeon" (Columbus, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rage: A Step-by-Step Guide to Overcoming Explosive Anger (Paperback)
I have had rage episodes throughout my life. In fact, last Sunday, July 1, in the downtown area of my city, I went into an explosive outburst of energy, which I now know was a rage episode. After ninety minutes, it was over. It is a good thing that I have no history of violence against others.
This book is the kind of book every inmate, ex-con and every recovering drunk and recovering addict needs to read. The twelve programs, the recovering centers don't touch this topic. Anger, oh heck no...we are talking about rage.... Anger is a kitty-cat compared to rage. Rage is Rambo on Steroids and the blindness of a terrorists. Forget Anger Management; by the time we get to this class, we have already had rage experiences. Anger Management is too churchy. I went to Mental Health Clinics, Social workers, priests, preachers and private shrinks and none of them explained this experience to me like this author. We got to quit giving the world the image that Americans are all nice and we want to save the world. Let us first save ourselves not from terrorists, per se, but from home grown Ragers. Look at the statitics of domestic abuse, Judges. Judges, these folks need to be treated for rage. The author says calling rage anger is like calling a hurricane a bad storm. The author suggests one in five experience rage from time to time. Why do you think they call it ROAD RAGE. HELLO....Domestic violence is Rage, not simply getting irritated or mad. I grew up with Rage. I can't change this. I am now getting past the hate of those beatings. I got infected and did not know what to call it. Now I do; Thanks to this book. I cannot believe we only have one review on this book. Get honest ladies and gentlemen or else we will lose our lovers and friends, that is, who ever is left; we will also destroy ourselves in the process.

As a clinician I would recommend this book to most clients who experience rage. It is written in laymans terms and uses real life examples. I find it facinating.

Overcoming outrageous rage,

Ron Potter-Efron once again presents clinicians and clients with an insightful exposition of the family of emotions associated with interpersonal aggression and violence. He describes the intrapersonal roots of the interpersonal experience of explosive anger that is as disruptive of the aggressor's life as it is of the aggressed. For Ron rage is more than the far extreme of anger continuum. He anchors the rage experience in the brain center that regulates emotion and impulse control. The essential neurochemical (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine) conditions for mood regulation are impaired. In addition to brain chemistry, Ron summarizes research on impaired brain anatomy in areas commonly associated with problem solving, impulse control, and quick temper. Impaired neurochemistry and impaired microanatomy become the preconditions for learning six kinds of rage responses to people and events, past and present. With characteristic clarity Ron offers a concise behavioral description of six kinds of rage responses: Sudden Rage (quick, intense, fury), Seething Rage (resentment & repressed hurts), Survival Rage (blind reactive response), Impotent Rage (intolerance & helplessness), Shame Rage (diminished, belittled), and Abandonment Rage (jealous & obsessive). Ron's rapid-assessment- instrument of the six kinds of rage guides the clinician and client through a discovery of rage events and their consequences for self and others. (We look forward to a validation study of "The Potter-Efron Rage Scale"). Ron provides sufficient description of each kind of rage to educate the client and to provide a rational explanation for each dimension of this devastating experience. Assessment and diagnosis sets the stage for creating an individual treatment plan. The ultimate goal of treatment for the client is a new sense of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and transpersonal comfort beyond the chronic explosive experience to perceived or real danger to mind, body, and spirit. The objective of treatment of this radical mood shift is information, formation, and transformation. Clinician and client can select from among a large array of strategic interventions. Each intervention is presented with a rationale for its relevance and a step-by-step guide for resolving each of the six kinds of rage. This book is the third in a trilogy of well-crafted treatment manuals for anger, shame, and rage, also published by New Harbinger. The trilogy comprises a package of interventions for those seeking to change anger-rage-shame responses to unresolved crises, tragedies, and traumas. Ron does not to pretend to offer the final word on rage intervention. However, twenty years of clinical research-practice culminates in a unique clinical guide for facilitating interventions with those who suffer from explosive rage beyond healthy and appropriate anger for justice.

Succinct, to the point, useful. For some insight into rage this book is an excellent source. It goes to the heart of the matter rather than blathering on endlessly in frilly data which is of no practical use.

I loved the book because it was so well organized. It makes the matter easy to find and remember. I have applied the insight to all the times I have been angry(not just in a rage) and have understood a lot about myself. The ABCDE technique could have been elaborated upon,. That is the only thing which keeps this book from being self-sufficient. Great book all in all! I would give it a four and a half but since that option for rating does not exist I will give it a five.

Once I got past admitting that I had rage issues, I ordered this book and I'm so glad I did.
The author totally gets what I'm feeling and suggests practical steps for dealing with rage. A concrete how-to to living a more whole, hopeful life in spite of our struggles.

I was hoping for something refreshing about rage, it's causes and consequences but found more psycho-stuff that leaves so much important information by the wayside. There are valuable coping mechanisms within it's pages but was disappointed that there was nothing about classism, racism, or the deeper currents that prvoke such rage. It was a topical read but nothing note worthy or deeply supportive.
