5.0 out of 5 stars A horror writer with a new twist!
I enjoyed Rage. It was not a 'nice' book, but it was never intended to be. I think it shows an excellent portrayal of a seriously disturbed young man's descent into madness. Talk about the last straw that breaks the camels back - this book is an excellent example of that. So next time folks, think about that one, little, annoying thing you might do to someone...

1.0 out of 5 stars Hardcore Gruel and Gore in an Unsettling Tale of Violence
On the cover of the paperback edition of Steven Gerlach's Rage a fellow author describes this book as "a volcano of a book." In some ways he's right. This book started slowly, almost boringly. The tension slowly builds until the ultra-violent but highly predictable ending.

I really didn't like this book. I am surprised I finished it. The saving grace was...

Talk about the last straw that breaks the camels back - this book is an excellent example of that. I look forward to his future publications. Those of you who are concerned about your kids reading this stuff....you kinda had an idea what you were getting into by reading the blurb - so don't leave it lying around for your kids to pick up - easy fix!!

Wow!!! Rage is a chilling story about a lonely, desperate, distressed young man (Ben). Ben's character is very 'real'. You can sympathise with Ben. You can understand his need for acceptance, love and affection...you find yourself wanting to help Ben. You soon come to realise that Ben's issues are more profound than yours...and...then come the horrendous, bloodcurdling events!!! Events that are unspeakable & downright nauseating!!! Events that actually do take place in our world!!! Gerlach is a brilliant writer. He accurately captured what life could be like for people as disturbed as Ben.

This book is terrifying because it mirrors reality!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top marks for Gerlach, September 21, 2005

Compelling, thrilling, horrifying, gripping, sickening, challenging, disturbing, and masterfully written. All the stuff an intense psychological horror should be.

No, it is not for the kids or faint of heart. Not for the squeamish either. But if this is your style of fiction, you won't find many authors that can do it better. Well written and had to be painstakingly researched.

There are more books out there from this author? Bring it ON!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rage, February 6, 2005

Rage tells the story of Ben Jackson, an insecure college student who is getting sick of the way women treat him. They look down at him, they reject him, they treat him like a piece of trash. At least, this is how Ben sees it.

Nobody knows, but deep inside, everything is starting to get too much for him. Slowly, anger starts building up inside of him. And how Ben deals with this anger..........well, I don't want to spoil that for you, but it is well worth finding out.

Gerlach's style of writing is cold and crystal clear. The book is very easy to read, yet you can still picture the scenes in your mind with ease. For me, there was never a dull moment, never did I feel I had to skip paragraphs because they were boring. Every sentence is fun to read, even in situations that would be boring in other books, such as Ben going to the library, or talking to his parents.

If you don't appreciate reading scenes of fairly graphic sex or mutilation, then Rage probably isn't for you. There are only a few of these moments, but they are fairly extreme. If, like me, this is how you like your fiction, then Rage is sure to satisfy.

Rage really has it all: love; sorrow; death; happiness and anger. If you like your fiction hard-hitting and bloody, then Rage is for you.

So to find out how Ben Jackson spirals out of control, and who he takes his rage out on, buy this book. You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Touch of Troubled Youth, September 24, 2005
This review is from: Rage (Mass Market Paperback)
I picked up this book not knowing quite what to expect and that's exactly what I got, the unexpected.
RAGE took me into the mind of a troubled man, who is totally confused by it all. It rushed onto me images, although unsettling, that I could not turn away from.
One of the fastest books I have ever read, anyone who wants a story that will keep you intrigued to the end will be satisfied with RAGE.
Congratulations to Mr. Gerlach.
I will be moving quickly to Lake Mountain.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love The Works Of This Ascending Author - You Will Too, September 20, 2005
This review is from: Rage (Mass Market Paperback)
Steve Gerlach is one of the top new authors from Australia and Rage is a book you won't want to miss. I remember the day I found it on the shelves of my local bookstore. I didn't want to stay up that night but you can not put this thriller down. Scared the heck out of me the way other of my favorite Authors such as Richard Laymon and Jack Ketchum have in the past. I will not spoil the plot for you but will say that if you read it you will be hooked on Gerlach. I give it my highest rating of 5 stars and this is from "sweetdeath" red star powerseller on Ebay.
Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A new, challenging kind of horror, September 20, 2005

Once in a while one stumbles across writers who has "that little extra" about them. It could be the plots, their style, dialogue, characters... and probably all of it mixed together. Writers like i.e. Richard Laymon and Bentley Little has it - and I think Steve Gerlach has it.
You recognize the author just by reading and if you like the stuff, you come back for more.

I've read a couple of Gerlach' books and I come back for more.

Steve Gerlach has what I would call a no-nonsense style of writing.
He doesn't wrap things up nice and easy, he doesn't hide unpleasant sides about his characters or shelter them from harm, and he doesn't pretend that we live in a fairytale world where sex and violence isn't an everyday constant factor that pound on us from every billboard, commercial, tv-report or newspaper.

Whereas Gerlach comes out with guns blazing in "The Nocturne", "Rage" follows a different path by exploring the terror within ourselves. Fast easy writing, the action is still there and the reader doesn't get wayled by boring sidetracks or hung up on 'roadbumps' of useless descriptions.

"Rage" opens up a window into the troubled mind of young Ben and before you know it, your're clinging onto his back, helplessly following his wild descent.
Ben doesn't quite fit in, he struggles with himself, with women, with family, lack of supporting in the things that is most troublesome for him. Ben is lost with no other safetyline than the one Rage is holding onto in the other end.
Life doesn't treat Ben easy, and once you get to know him, you might think it's shouldn't. Herein lies the strenght of Rage for me. I've been young myself and understand some of the events/reasoning that drives Ben but I doens't agree with his solutions or actions. In that way Ben jumps out of the book and challenge me as a reader.
Mr. Gerlach doesn't spring to rescue with all the answers or soothing words to smooth things over. Instead he challenges you by delivering the raw facts: This is it, Deal with it, Take a stand!

It's refreshing to read a book that gives you one wild ride and still leaves room for your own opinion.

Needless to say, this is no book for kids or teenagers, you have to have a more mature viewpoint to face the dilemmas and moral issues of Ben - and of course the stomach to endure life's horror the Gerlach' way...

5.0 out of 5 stars RAGE, February 8, 2005
This review is from: Rage (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was great, I would recommend it to any horror/suspense fan. It kept me interested from start to finish.
You don't usually feel for the bad guy, but in this case you could not help it. I could have not been more impressed and I can't wait to get my hands on more of Steve's books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep your eyes on Gerlach, June 22, 2004

This review is from: Rage (Mass Market Paperback)
Having been a fan of the late Richard Laymon, trying a novel from the guy who kept the Richard Laymon website running was a must. And the book proved to be every bit as good as Laymon at his best.

People were gorssed by the book (yes, it was explicit and disgusting in points), but they MUST have also been in awe. The main character is a turd, undoubtedly. But as you read RAGE, you can feel sorry for him (but never sorry enough for the climax!) Great characterisation, and a very enjoybale read. Get it, read it, love it!
