Book Description

May 1, 2007
A compelling psychological thriller that probes the darkest compulsions of the human mind.

Dr. Stanley Kolberg was not just murdered. His lifeless body was battered and broken almost beyond recognition, as though his unknown killer had been driven by a ferocious rage that had exploded madly out of control.

As far as the Seattle police are concerned, there is no shortage of suspects. A distinguished psychiatrist, Kolberg specialized in anger management and often treated violent offenders with severe psychiatric disorders. His client list is a virtual lineup of sociopaths, psychotics, and convicted murderers, any one of whom might have unleashed their homicidal fury on the doctor.

For Dr. Joel Ashman, who consults as a profiler for Seattle Homicide, the shocking crime strikes particularly close to home. Not only was the victim a fellow psychiatrist, but Kolberg was also his former partner and mentor--he was practically a second father to Joel, who soon finds himself the target of a faceless stalker as well.

Who killed Stanley Kolberg and why? The answers lie hidden in a lurid underworld of depraved sex and violence--and in the tortured past of one disturbed young woman.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In his latest novel, the author of Pandemic (2005) and Resistance (2006) sets aside ailments of the body for problems with the psyche. When psychiatrist Joel Ashman, a consultant for Seattle's Homicide Squad, is called to evaluate the gruesome murder of his former friend and mentor Stanley Kolberg, an anger-management specialist, he has no idea that before he finds the killer, he will need to investigate Kolberg's dark sexual secrets and the apparent suicide of one of his own patients. Unfortunately, Joel's privileged knowledge of Kolberg creates roadblocks for the police that may make the case even harder to solve. Kalla never matches the breakneck pace of his previous books, and the integration of Ashman's memories with present action is sometimes awkward. Yet there's a solid readership for this high-concept mix of sordid content and ramped-up suspense. Ridley Pearson does it better than Kalla, but Pearson's fans looking for something new may want to try this one. Stephanie Zvirin

More About the Author

Born, raised, and still residing in Vancouver, Kalla spends his days (and sometimes nights) working as an ER Physician in an urban teaching hospital.

The idea for his first medical thriller, PANDEMIC, sprang from his clinical experience in facing the SARS crisis of 2003. He has written five science thrillers and or medical mysteries, delving into themes and topics as diverse as superbugs, drug addiction, prions, DNA evidence, pandemics and patient abuse.

Kalla's sixth book, OF FLESH AND BLOOD, is a departure from the medical thriller genre. Featuring two multi-generational families, a major West Coast medical center and interwoven storylines, he tackles the human condition through the loves, lives and struggles of characters connected by lineage and bound by family secrets.

His books have been translated into ten languages, and Pandemic and Resistance have been optioned for feature films.

Daniel received his MD from the University of British Columbia. He is married and the proud father of two girls in a home predominated by the XX chromosome (even his beloved Labrador retriever, Lola, is female.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than the last one, October 18, 2006

I just finished Rage Therapy. This author has been 50-50 for me so far, so I hesitated with Rage Therapy. I am glad that I ended up getting it.

The story of psychologist Joel - being asked to "solve" the murder of his friend and co-worker is slow starting. At the beginning, I was wondering if this would be yet another slow moving Kalla novel (I hated his previous book and loved his first one)but it soon picks up and I found myself totally engrossed.

Quick paced and entertaining and kept me guessing.

Nice medical thriller. Not as good as Pandemic, but pretty good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pathetic people, March 2, 2010

This review is from: Rage Therapy (Mass Market Paperback)
Rage Therapy centers around the deaths of two shrinks who happen to be some of the most disgusting and horrible people alive and another shrink who is a dundering coward. All three of these despicable men get their just desserts, though I thought the punishment Joel received was more of a slap on the wrist considering the amount of obstructing he was guilty of. No rainbows or HEA here, just a gritty story about the deviants of our society.

This is the third book I've read by Kalla and I must say that he is maturing into a fine thriller writer. His books hold my attention so well that I usually go through one in within 2 days of starting it. While his subject matter is medical-based, he doesn't mire down the "good stuff" with too much medical techno-babble. His characters are well defined and the action keeps moving right along, almost from Page 1. I could think of many worse ways to spend my leisure time!
