Ragesong:Awakening draws you in with a battle right at the beginning to give you a great idea as to what is to come during the book. The music aspect added a great layer to the story as you don't read many books about music giving power. As they grew to be more comfortable in their surroundings their power grew and became even more exciting. When the story was finished I was left pleasantly waiting for the next adventure to come. Would definitely suggest this book to anyone who enjoys a great clean story. Can't wait for my son to read this as it will certainly propel him into this story and take him on a journey!

Ragesong is an action-packed thrill ride that is both brilliant and captivating. This story will not let you go until the last page. Simmons has created something magical that teens will call AWESOME! I think what made this book such a fascinating read was the character, Jake, and how I was able to connect with him immediately. J.R. Simmons uses a lot of pop culture references, especially nods to music and video games, which I enjoyed. The story was fast paced, engaging, and unique. I especially enjoyed the fantastical bits--the world of Fermicia and the magic systems created. The two Changelings that assist Jake are funny, brave, and heroic. Seriously, teens, especially teen boys, will LOVE this book!

I really enjoyed this book! It was very creative and fun. I loved the characters and thought they made the book. I loved the idea of Ragesong and how it connected with their musical instruments and their physical abilities. The story line was fast-paced enough to keep me reading, and yet well thought out. It was definitely a page-turner and I finished it quickly. There is no profanity or intimacy, but it is quite violent. I would recommend it for ages 13 and up. Yay! It is YA approved! Ragesong: Awakening is the story of two youths who are transported from our world into another in order to use their special gifts to help save the land from a tyrannical government. Their musical abilities in our world translate into warrior abilities in the other, and together with their guides, two changelings, they learn to wield their new-found skills and control the power of Ragesong, which could lead to a new life and hope for the kingdom of Fermicia.

This teen adventure story is captivating from the beginning, drawing you into the two worlds and the lives of the characters. It is fun and funny, yet stern and serious, sometimes within moments. The end leaves you hoping the next book will be out soon, so you can be drawn yet again into the power of Ragesong.

I quite enjoyed Ragesong. It has a few of my favorite fantasy ideas: shapeshifters and music magic. The shapeshifters were very well done and were my favorite characters. The music magic was nice, but the main characters did not actually take their instruments into the fantasyland with them; their musical achievements in our world somehow unlocked magical abilities in the other world. I really wanted to see the magic flute and saxophone! But the book was quick-paced and light, and it kept the adventure moving and the pages turning. The characters were interesting, which is even more important to me than plot. I did feel that it was a bit more of a YA boy book than for both genders; the female characters didn't get to be the viewpoint characters, so it was harder to get to know them, and the boys were very focused on "boy stuff," mostly video games. Probably a girl who liked video games would have been more drawn in. But even so, I enjoyed the story. The viewpoint characters had nice voices and I enjoyed getting to know them. I will certainly read the sequel when it comes out.

Simmons does a great job at painting a new world that I look forward to enjoying in the follow on novels. This book was perfect for his target audience and anybody else who enjoys an enjoyable fantasy read. I found myself laughing, smiling and all the the other emotions that the characters in the book express. Great job!
