Thompson's study of guerrilla warfare and terrorism and their opponents is useful at two levels. For the beginner, it is a sound summary of the twentieth century's depressingly extensive experience in these areas that does not overemphasize Vietnam and does include a good many minor, bloody, and instructive conflicts. For the more knowledgeable reader, Thompson's extensive experience in security work and weapons training gives the large part of the book devoted to counter terrorism additional authority. Furthermore, it's readable and useful for a variety of purposes, from organizing a SWAT team to researching a men's action novel.
