Book Description

March 1, 1999 0788161377 978-0788161377
Guerrilla warfare may well be seen as a 20th century development, although its origins go back to the dawn of warfare. It is probable that insurgency & counter-terrorist actions by superpowers & lesser nations will become the most likely use of military power in the coming decades. This study is an historical examination of the development of counter-insurgency & counter-terrorist warfare. As well as an assessment of the tactics that have been effective, the author emphasizes the importance of intelligence in these operations, reviews the weaponry used, & analyzes the training of 3 elite special warfare units. Unusual & interesting action photos.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Thompson's study of guerrilla warfare and terrorism and their opponents is useful at two levels. For the beginner, it is a sound summary of the twentieth century's depressingly extensive experience in these areas that does not overemphasize Vietnam and does include a good many minor, bloody, and instructive conflicts. For the more knowledgeable reader, Thompson's extensive experience in security work and weapons training gives the large part of the book devoted to counter terrorism additional authority. Furthermore, it's readable and useful for a variety of purposes, from organizing a SWAT team to researching a men's action novel. By A Customer
The use of terror against nation-states is not new. This book helps the reader to understand motivational factors regarding the use of terrorism, and how to successfully counter terrorism, by looking at successful and not so successful counter and anti-terrorist campaigns.
