As a relatively new cloth convertible top owner I wanted to pro-actively take good care of my top from the start. All roads lead to RaggTopp Fabric Protectant, which essentially meant that it has the recommendation of the Hartz Fabric Company recommendation. I used this product once and it worked ok. Now a year later and ready for another treatment I tried it again and it was a disaster. First of all they changed the spray nozzle on the aerosol can to produce an extremely fine spray. Whatever their reason for this was it now means that it is impossible to use this product outdoors as the slightest of breezes sends it off into the wind. You must apply it in a garage setting only. Secondly when my small top failed to bead water even after applying three coats per the directions I contacted the manufacture to try to understand what went wrong. They were far from professional, in fact I would characterize their behavior as nothing less than insane. First telling me that I did not apply enough. Then telling me that I applied too much. And a few other really bizarre comments were sent to me written in all capital letters! It appears that this company is really just a one man and a bitter and unhappy fellow at that! But the good news is this interesting information that I would like to share with you. This is not the only option for fabric top protectant. And of the alternatives there is one that had been the defacto Hartz recommended product for over 20 years (RaggTopp was only recommended by them for the last few years - do I smell a bribe, or should I say paid product endorsement?). The alternative is a product called 303 Protectant - High Tech Fabric Guard. It is available from Amazon and it is less expensive than Raggtopp. 303 also makes a fabric cleaner.Read more ›

I'm on my 3rd BMW convertible - 1994, 2000, 2005 (see a pattern?) - and I have used the RaggTopp Convertible Top Fabric Protectant on every one of them. All have black fabric tops.

If you are new to this product read below on tips to help you apply it. Here are the reasons why I'm giving it 5 stars: cost, time, ease-of-use:

Cost: For what it costs (less than $20) you are really getting your money's worth by extending the life of your fabric top. Before I use this product, water would be absorbed into the fabric. After I use this product, the water beads up and rolls off the top.

Time: It takes me 30 minutes (depending on drying time) to apply 2 coats of this product. 1 can should be enough to give you 2 coats and I would recommend doing 2 coats.

Ease of Use: Follow the instructions by shaking the can and spraying. Use goggles and dust guard to protect your eyes and nose.

TIPS:
- Don't use on a windy day.
- Use on a warm day to allow it to dry.
- Wash your top clean before using this product.
- When applying the product, cut out a 10 inch x 20 inch piece of cardboard to protect the windows and paint.
- You don't need to tape everything up. If you overspray, wipe it off before it dries.
- Use the whole can to get 2 coats.
- Reapply every year.
- Make sure you do this before the rain or snow season.

I cringe when I see soaking wet tops on other cars, so take care of your canvas, okay? Pretty much everyone in the Boxster community (see ppbb.com) uses Raggtopp on their fabric tops. A bottle of the Raggtop cleaner lasts quite for years, while a can of the spray protectant (this product) lasts about 2 or 3 treatments, so plan on buying a can each year or so. End result is a waterproof top that beads up all water like no other. I have never seen any discoleration as described in another review here, and can't see how the fabric product would change the color on a fabric top. Bonus: the price here via Amazon is about as good as it gets.

If you have a cloth convertible top, then Ragg Topp is the only way to. Think of it as scothguard for a convertible top. Spray on light coats and let them dry in between. Mask off your windows and car finish. It's tough to remove overspray once it dries. I used old sheets and newspaper for the rear window. Give it about three light coats. Let dry between. To heavy and it will run all over the place. It's like a liquid spray wax. Once finished and totally dry, pull and the garden hose and give it a shower. It beads up like RainEx. FYI. Don't try to dry or spread with a rag. One side of mine looked right and the other where I rubbed it have to be redon. Enjoy.. 5 thumbs up.

Lots of conflicting reviews on this product. I had wanted to get this for a few years, and ended up getting it as a gift. I like the idea that it has UV protection in addition to its water repelling properties. I lightly cleaned my canvas top with a brush to remove any dirt and prepared an overspray blocker out of a cardboard box. I wanted to tape off the areas around where the top meets the body, but didnt have any masking tape. I sprayed the top once, waited 15 minutes and sprayed again in another direction, then used the rest of the product focusing on the seams. I read the instructions about the spray distance after using the product at around 4 to 6 inches. It went on well with no dispersing problems into the air. All overspray on the paint wiped off easily and the product did not leave any uneven spots on the canvas top.
