Review

The power of desire has rarely been so ravishingly lensed as in "Raging Sun, Raging Sky," cult helmer Julian Hernandez's stunning ode to love and sex, which literally elevates both to mythological heights. --Variety

This movie is simply stunning, and will haunt you long after you see it. Its over three hours long, and is almost entirely in black and white with little dialogue, and 90% percent of the time, the actors are nude. It is basically a movie with three acts. The first act is the two main lovers meet each other, which can only be described as one of the most original love scenes I have ever seen. Then after they separate, one of the two spends the second act of the movie looking for the other. He will go to any length to find him. He goes to seedy back alleys where others are engaging in hard core sex, and the director holds nothing back in these scenes, movie theaters, parks, whatever necessary. And the last act, is them finding each other, but it's in a way, that will blow you away. Different people will view this movie in different ways, but the movie is clear on one thing, and that love is all that matters. With Hollywood so caught up in special effects, animation, and toilet humor movies, it is so refreshing to find a movie that does none of this, but creates a movie for the ages. Simply put the movie in your player, and sit back and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Demanding, imperfect, worthwhile September 18, 2010
Format:DVD
There are many difficulties with this film, so many that a great many people won't like it. Leaving aside the gay aspect, which will keep many people away (their loss), there is the length. Three hours. It will not accommodate your desire for linear exposition. It is neither cute nor campy. There are no bangs. You must either submit yourself to its time frame or just watch something else. You must also watch more with your right brain than your left. You will not get a quick fix. You must hold every scene in your consciousness without expecting it to make sense immediately, but rather let succeeding scenes - like pixels - build up the overall image. Along the way you will be treated to some beautiful imagery, much of it chiaroscuro. If you can manage all this, you might at least appreciate what the director attempts. Whether you will think he succeeds is another matter. Some artistic efforts are worth experiencing even if, in the long run, you don't particularly like or agree with the result. Being broadened has some value. However, since this is not what would normally be termed "entertainment", you might be advised to rent before you buy.

Personally this was good experience for me. And a moving one. But it does demand some work on the viewer's part. A "work of art" isn't merely work for the artist alone.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Rocky Road to hoe ... September 12, 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I started viewing this film with no particular preconceptions, but I got restive after the first hour, then another hour went by, then I thought the film had finished but then it got a second wind, became suspiciously metaphysical, and finally ended after 3 hours and 12 minutes. I was exhausted and in a torpor - what was the point of all this Castaneda inspired nonsense? It occurred to me that the film should have been divided into two - the banal first part, which runs nearly 2 hours, and then the metaphysical second part, which could be a sequel running 70 minutes or so, and containing some extraordinary geological features and special effects, easily the most interesting components of this curious film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Abundant nudity, but cold as ice April 3, 2012
Format:Amazon Instant Video
This movie is visually stunning but otherwise almost completely unsatisfying. There is more full male nudity than in any other non-porn movie I have ever seen, and the casual way it is handled is marvelously refreshing; but despite abundant nudity and the theme of gay love interrupted and reclaimed, this is the LEAST erotic and the LEAST romantic movie I have seen in ages.

Every second of its over three hours is so tightly choreographed, every slightest movement so obsessively under the director's control, that it might as well be claymation. It is bloodless and cold, so cerebral that the flesh on abundant display might just as well be clay in an animator's studio.

As long as I had no idea who anybody was, how they were related to one another, and what the point of the movie was, I was fascinated just watching the people move like dancers through the fantastic sets and landscapes. But when its point began to come clear, that point was so trite that I wished it had stayed cold and confusing but fascinating to watch.

Overall, though, I'm glad I watched it, because it changed ME in a way I never would have expected. I discovered for the first time that I've spent all my life thinking of Mexico as a barbaric country full of poverty, drug lords, brutality, violence, filth, ugliness and absolutely nothing worthwhile. A country like that could not have given birth to a movie as accomplished and sophisticated as this movie is, so I'm completely overhauling my attitude toward our neighbor to the south.

5.0 out of 5 stars GAY BAROQUE October 17, 2013
By Nomlac
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Raging Sun, Raging Sky is simply one of the best gay films I ever saw. It is also the work of one of the best directors of our times. His other movie I saw (can't remember the name) very simple, almost stark, about a youth wandering alone in a mexican city, looking but not finding a lost love, it is almost the opposite. This one is much more difficult, symbolic, baroque, almost out of fashion, in a Cocteau kind of way, a danger in our times. But he succeeds in a splendid and beautiful manner. Finally, this film and the other, so different in style, are so very similar in thematic and its vision of love, that they could only be made by the same guy. Oh, and I was almost forgetting. The film is so good not because it is gay, but in spite of it, almost all gay cinema is such a mess! Great movie, great director, great love story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully filmed
Slow paced but captivating visually. Reminded me of situations I've been in myself. All of the actors are beautiful. Little to no dialog but dialog isn't necessary!

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad movie, nothing to do with the seller.
It's over 3 hours long, black and white. I loved the nudity in it, but found myself falling asleep. It's extremely boring.
