5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! April 3, 2014
Style Name:Playstation 3
To start with, I have never played the hand held version of Ragnarok but it always looked very interesting to me. So when it released on the PS3,I wanted to give it a shot. In a nutshell, it's an amazing buy at $40.

The gameplay is essentially: start at the guild, go out complete quests, collect reward, grow stronger, rinse and repeat. Simple but very fun. You also have the option to take the same quest you completed and play it as many times as you like (with no penalty) taking back all the loot, monster cards etc. back with you. This serves three purposes 1.) Level grinding (which I love) 2.) collecting materials to build better weapons, armor, potions and monster cards/new skills. 3.) Trying to beat your own personal best time and chain combo score.

The controls take a bit of getting used to in the beginning but it's really nothing that difficult- example using the cross pad to target different enemies. Also if you find yourself like me wanting to hit the square button instead of the circle button to attack, that can trip you up a bit. However the game states that you have the ability to tweak the control scheme to your liking. In the end, I just adapted to the default control and now it's second nature.

This is also one game that will throw quite a bit of "this is how you do X" dialogue in the beginning. But after about 15-20 minutes of introduction and getting your first couple missions out of the way, you are introduced to your room where you can save, change outfits, collect items you have dropped off, change the different background music for the game via a phonograph (you buy records in the item shops) and view quests. In short, do what you want!

I also really enjoyed the graphics and color in this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars addictive, fun but not for everyone. April 3, 2014
Style Name:Playstation 3|Verified Purchase
did not play the original one so I decided to give this one a chance and I am enjoying it a lot. It's no monster hunter, but it's still good . I wish there were more classes to choose from, and a way to level up characters more would have been great . Also the game can get a bit too hard if you are not playing with others online ( you can hire mercenaries in-game but the AI is as dumb as a rock) . Still the reason I give this 5/5 if how addictive it can get , reminds me of Monster Hunter 3 on the wii , a game that can be very repetitive yet extremely addictive. There is no story in this game, you basically go to an area , kill monsters , defeat boss , gather items etc get better gear , go kill stronger monsters etc. The graphics are not great at all..it IS a Vita port so yeah if you care a lot about graphics this will disappoint. Not much else to say ..if you like Monster-Hunting sort of games with anime-flavor this is the game to get, especially if you plan to play it online. If you don't like repetitive games or care about story and graphics, avoid this.

5.0 out of 5 stars great boss hunter game April 3, 2014
Style Name:Playstation Vita|Verified Purchase
i've played a lot of the boss hunter genre games, none to CRAZY depth like you can no doubt go with all of them.
i really like toukiden as of late, and welcomed this game when i saw the announcement. i've played some ragnarok mmo, but never got into the handheld.

it's a solid boss hunter type game, and seems to have a large amount of content.
if you get bored watching 20 minutes of video this game probably isn't for you.

the real advantage imho is that i can play on my ps3 them hop on the vita.
or i can bring my vita to a friends house who has this, and play in person online.
also just being able to play a solid boss hunting game on a big screen is really nice.

the game has it's slowdown and isn't perfect. but it's minor gripes at the end of the day.
feels like it's what it set out to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ragnarok Odyssey ACE PS3 June 5, 2014
Style Name:Playstation 3|Verified Purchase
This is a decent game. It still has those infamous marshmellow gumdrop monsters with smiling faces in it that many Japanese games seem to have, heh. This is a monster hunter type game with hack-n-slash combat. The upgrades are weapon and cards that fir on your outfit. There are many outfits to choose from. You can also rent mercenaries to get two additional AI partners. I take the mercs with the most health, it has worked so far.

To get money, materials are worth far more than mission payouts. Money is needed to upgrade the weapons and outfits. First, however, you need to get the right materials for the upgrades.

Cards fit on the outfits. Most of the cards are drops from monsters. These cards increase health, add attack or defense value, and so on. There is even a card that increases the time spent in air, useful for those tall pesky giants.

Graphics are ok, nothing special but quite colorful. Characters don't have much to say other than 'ugh', 'hi', etc. Music is ok, there are many free downloadable music tracks to 'purchase' with in game money. There is also a decent amount of DLC for free, outfits and such. Nice.

I found the controls a little wonky since I am not used to the triangle being the main attack button. There is a way to change the control scheme with 6 different presets. I have not messed with though.

Overall, this is a neat game and takes sometime to play it all.
