Amazon.com

Ragnarok Odyssey is an Action Role-Playing game (RPG) for PlayStation Vita, that is set in a unique environment based in Norse mythology. Loosely built upon the world of the South Korean MMORPG Ragnarok Online, Ragnarok Odyssey challenges players to protect their home of Rune Midgard from a rampaging mass of invading giants, set on destruction. To do so they will have to master a challenging battle system full of fluid combos and chain attacks, and enlist the help of friends online. Additional features include: deep character customization, six job classes, and beautiful cutscenes that take advantage of the PS Vita's superior graphics capabilities.

The special Mercenary Edition contains a variety of exclusive physical items. See the complete list of these below.

Fight Against the Giants, and Survive!

Since ancient times, mankind and the Isolated Land were always divided by what was called the "Thousand Year Mountains" -- a range of mountains even a flying dragon couldn't cross. Naturally, mankind had thus always been curious about the seemingly inaccessible Isolated Land, wondering what secrets it may hold. And in an ironic twist of fate, that curiosity and thirst for knowledge and adventure would be fulfilled in a most unwelcome way. With a thunderous sound that shook the entire land, the Thousand Year Mountains came crumbling down, unveiling ancient ruins from the era of the gods. People could finally bear witness to what had been hidden away in the Isolated Land for nearly an eternity - and unfortunately, it turned out to be hundreds and thousands of giants. It became immediately apparent that these were not friendly creatures as they mercilessly turned cities to rubble with mere swings of their gigantic arms, crushing families and histories alike.

Now, the kingdom of Rune Midgard is fighting valiantly for the survival of their country against the invading giants. The war has been fierce thus far, with massive casualties, but the resilient humans have managed to keep the giants at bay - if only temporarily. In an effort to prevent any recurrence of this massive tragedy, those in power ordered an enormous fortress called "The Shield" built at the entrance to the Isolated Land, to stand as a last barrier of hope and help fend off any inevitable future invasions. The residents of the kingdom may never return to their once peaceful way of life, but they will fight for whatever measure of prosperity they can still find. Their one and only reason to be has been ingrained into every citizen and turned into a rallying cry that echoes throughout the land: "Fight against the giants, and survive!"

Gameplay

Ragnarok Odyssey is an Action RPG set in an original world based on Norse mythology where a battle is being waged between humans and giants after the fall of the gods had previously separated the races. Players create their characters from over 20,000 possible combinations based on customizable physical features, then select one of six specialized job classes. The game's real-time battles are fast and furious as players can fling enemies skyward, follow them into the air for gravity-defying strikes, then finish off the combo by smacking them clear across the stage. Gameplay is driven forward by story-advancing and optional quests, and up to four players can fight together in online co-op mode.

5.0 out of 5 stars RPG to go! November 1, 2012
By V. Sun
Edition:Mercenary Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I received the Mercenary Edition of Ragnarok Odyssey (hereon abbreviated to RO) earlier today and am glad I picked this game up. From the get-go, a few things resonate this games predecessor Ragnarok Online, but is different enough that it doesn't feel old or outdated. Gameplay is structured around the completion of picked up missions/quests, which are obtained from either the guild's or pub's counter. Unfortunately, there aren't any additional cities/towns to explore and this may disappoint some players.

In regards to how the box or bonuses look, I won't be covering it as others have already done so. However, for those collectors out there or those who want to gift this, the extras are nice for the extra 10 USD (especially when other games easily charge 20+ USD for extras/preorder bonuses).

Experiencing all the missions in RO took me roughly 70 hours; that aside, there are still many hidden crafting quests that I have not finished finding so I cannot say that I've fully completed this game. The drop rates for most items are fairly decent and frequent that I don't really find myself getting annoyed unless it's that rare boss material/drop. Progress may feel a bit slow to some, but I honestly liked the pace since it gave me time to polish up my timing and learn new combos.

There is a trading feature that wasn't entirely obvious and utilizes the PSV app called Near. As far as I can tell currently, you can only trade one item at a time. The nice thing about this system is that you don't really lose the item itself as a copy is sent to the recipient, but an individual character may only have 5 items obtained from Near. Any additional ones will require you to sell off a previously picked up one to make room for another.

Overall, it is a fun game that any RPGer or MMO gamer will enjoy (especially since it's portable). Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ragnarok Odyssey sets the standard for Vita box sets November 1, 2012
By Cheska
Edition:Mercenary Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
XSeed had some of the best overall created box sets for the PSP during its run, and their first effort for the Vita title Ragnarok Odyssey, they could not have done a better job. The box is crafted out of shiny, bright and poppy aluminum styled material that shines and looks beautiful on the shelf. Inside, you will find a "Mercenary Guide, collector's CD album, a set of playing cards, and the game itself.

Aside from the immaculate box, the first thing that drew my eye was the Mercenary Guide: Guide of Midgard. At first, I assumed it would be more an art-book than anything, but to my woe and surprise, it was a very detailed miniature guidebook that spans 92 pages. The pictures are clean, the design is nice, and I can see it being really helpful the more I get into the game. I know many Vita owners, including myself, are really irritated and bummed that the Vita does not come with manuals (digital only), but this totally fixes the problem for this game and then some. World maps, area maps, character and monster bios, and extra info makes this purchase all the more worth it. The book itself is made of outstanding paper materials. This is really a treat.

After the joy of looking through the book, I quickly tore the plastic off of the CD case to see get a hear of the album, and the music is just about what I expected from a game of this genre. It hits all the same tonal areas out of what you would expect from Monster Hunter for instance, but it keeps a more anime tone to match the visual aspect of the game. The theme is good but nothing that inspired. I've only listened fully to about 6 tracks and skimmed through the rest, but it's decent for a random listen and it's better than I expected. I would say the slip cover case it more inspired and provoking of love than the music. Do not get me wrong; I do really like the music and it sounds like it will do the game justice, but do not expect Final Fantasy status music, which I doubt anyone did to begin with.

The cards are not anything especially eye catching, but what they are is well made. At least it wasn't cheap, flimsy paper they worked with. I do not know if every box comes with a random set of cards; I got two of the same card in mine, and the rest were assorted monsters. I have not done research about these or have looked them up; however, they are good collector's pieces regardless and the artwork and stats on the back are nice overall. A great bonus on top of everything else that is for sure.

As for the game, I have only dug a short time into it, and I can say a few things about it. Firstly, the menus are not hard to handle and getting through the setup is a breeze. The graphics look gorgeous on the Vita's OLED screen and do more justice than the slightly above PS2 inspired graphics screenshots as seen online. When I was playing during some battles, I was totally invested into the missions and the game-play defiantly worked well with the soundtrack, listed earlier. I haven't had the chance to interact online or local play, but if it's anything like the single player missions x2-4, you will have a great time.

Ragnarok Odyssey is not for everyone (especially if you like a more traditional RPG experience or tend to like shooters or the like), and the anime art style may turn some Western players off; however, the core experience seems like it will be a blast, and the game plays very fluidly on the Vita. The controls are easy to handle and there is a ton of content to explore. Overall, if you are a fan of Monster Hunter or co-op mission games, this is the game for you. The reviews so far have been critical (IGN) or luke-warm, but give the game a shot and you won't be let down.

Also, this collector's edition is one of the highlights of the year, especially for only 10 dollars more than the normal price. Pick it up before people start price gouging! Good luck and have fun.

UPDATE (Nov 5, 2012):

After spending some time through the game both on single player and online, my statement stands firm from beforehand: this game is defiantly worth it. I've gotten to the fifth chapter and have played dozens of online missions. The players online are nice, fun, and respectful, and I have not run into anybody just screwing around and being rude, which is a good sign. The combat is intense and having four players is a blast. The strategy and efficiency, especially when the classes of each player are varied, help the fun and excitement, especially for harder missions. I play as the assassin class myself, and although I really like that class and keep it as my main one, the game does offer the ability to have class switching after the second chapter. If anyone is worried about one class for the whole game or start over, do not be.

One thing to note is that there is little of a story in the game, but this game is more about the player experience than heavy handed story telling. It's great to just cool down and relax for awhile everyday, team up with some friends, and battle some monsters. This is the best multi-player experience for the PS Vita right now, and it deserves that title. Party chat works with this title, but you have to make sure you set it up with your PSN friends before you go online the game, or it will disconnect all of you from the network. This also means you cannot, for whatever reason, press the home button during online play. It can be bothersome if it is done by accident during intense play, but as long as you remember this, you will be fine.

Overall, Ragnarok Odyssey offers a tremendous amount of content, has a great trophy selection for PSN trophy hunters, and has the best online (and only RPG MMO styled, "Monster Hunting") for the handheld. If you are hesitant, but are even mildly curious, just go for it. I had two friends after I got the title that felt the same way, I talked them into it, and now we're playing every night, and they do not regret the purchase whatsoever. Gaming is all about having fun, and this title offers that fun in such an excitingly way, in a tight, portable experience.

Button combos in an Action/RPG is really fun. Weak story and progression. Lots of multiplayer features. Great visuals and environments.
