ragtime guitar, June 4, 2008
This review is from: Ragtime Guitar: 14 Songs Arranged for Solo Guitar (Paperback)
If you are reading this, and aren't a complete fingerstyle beginner, then you probably should get this. You want some nice ragtime guitar arrangements, right? If you are a complete beginner then it won't hurt to have this but the music may be a stretch (literally!).
This book has some well known pieces. A lot of it is pretty quick and raggy. But there are some pieces that can/should be played a lot slower and are really beautiful. It's a great mix.
If you are used to more of a blues style, first position chords, this book will definitely be a stretch in positions and moving up and down the neck but you will be able to get in via a few tunes like the author's own Delta Blues and Al's Slow Rag. Maybe then try Sunburst Rag and Ragtime Nightingale.
Most of the tunes are in standard tuning. A couple are in Dropped D (just tune the 6th string down a step) and are worth the small change. You won't need to tune all over to play the arrangements.
The book is 9"x12". It has standard musical notation; underneath that is tablature that gives the fretting of each note. The typesetting is very good. The CD is the author playing the arrangements and the music sounds great.
I play by reading the tablature for fretting and looking at the standard notation for the note durations. For example, if a note is tied over in the standard, it probably only shows in the tab when it is first played. You could probably do it by just listening to the CD and using the tab, but the note durations are very helpful. There are no durations in the tab, though the tab does line up exactly with the standard. I have so far not noticed any errors in the written music at all.
Another nice feature is notation showing recommendations for which fingers to use to fret the notes of difficult sections. I've found this information helpful.

This book is the source for ragtime guitar music., January 8, 2007
This review is from: Ragtime Guitar: 14 Songs Arranged for Solo Guitar (Paperback)
Since Ragtime traditionally is played on the piano, there are not many sources for ragtime guitar music. And what a great job Mr Jaffe did transposing these songs for the guitar. The fit for these compositions is very nice. In my opionion, Mr Jaffe hit the nail on the head. I have found learing the pieces to be much fun and so rewarding. If you are looking to learn some fingerstyle guitar, this is some great guitar music. You will become a much better guitar player if you give this book serious consideration. I hope that Mr Jaffe continues to pump out the books.
