Ragtime Rip-off,
By
This review is from: Ragtime, The Music of James Scott (MP3 Download)
I was checking out some mp3 albums of the music of James Scott, one of the "big three" of the classic ragtime composers from 100 years ago, the other two being Scott Joplin and Joseph Lamb. Scott is perhaps less recorded than Lamb, and both of course don't even come close to the representation of Joplin's music on disc. So I was surprised when I saw several choices, among them: RAGTIME MASTERS: THE BEST OF JAMES SCOTT by Ragtime Hit Makers, JAMES SCOTT RAGTIME OMNIBUS by Rocky Mountain Players, RAGTIME 101: JAMES SCOTT'S GREATEST HITS by Broadway Ragtime Players, RAGTIME: THE MUSIC OF JAMES SCOTT by Franklin Kennedy, JAMES SCOTT'S RAGIME [sic] MUSIC by The Ace Players (featuring a drawing on the cover of some guy who isn't even James Scott!), and RAGTIME: THE JAMES SCOTT SONGBOOK by Royce Reynolds. Imagine my surprise to find them all the same album! (There may be others. I didn't explore further.) This must be a new marketing scheme I have been hitherto unaware of. Record one album (and these sound like playbacks of some music-writing software like Finale, rather than an actual human pianist), release it under half a dozen titles "recorded" by half a dozen "artists" and then sit back and collect the payments from Amazon. I wonder if Amazon is aware of this charade? If anyone at Amazon reads these reviews, please pay heed to this scam!
