Book Description

June 28, 1984
Ragtime, the jaunty, toe-tapping music that captivated American society from the 1890s through World War I, forms the roots of America's popular musical expression. But the understanding of ragtime and its era has been clouded by a history of murky impressions, half-truths, and inventive fictions. Ragtime: A Musical and Cultural History cuts through the murkiness. A methodical survey of thousands of rags along with an examination of then-contemporary opinions in magazines and newspapers demonstrate how the music evolved and how America responded to it. "The most complete available discussion of ragtime" (Floyd & Reisser, Black Music in the United States).

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Edward A. Berlin's books, articles, and lectures have changed our understanding of ragtime history. Challenging the unsupported claims of earlier scholars, he presents documented facts and tightly reasoned interpretations, bringing a new standard of critical thinking to ragtime commentary. In addition to Ragtime, he has published King of Ragtime: Scott Joplin and His Era and Reflections and Research on Ragtime. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From The Washington Post

There is a certain richness, as well as a certain confusion, in the jumble that went under that name of ragtime when the name was new. . . . Berlin manages to preserves the richness while sorting out the confusion.

This is a well-written and researched book about Ragtime Music. I particularly appreciate the time given to the vocal music of the era, since it was the foundation of ragtime we now associate with piano literature. Edward Berlin analyzes several compositions and gives valuable information regarding the elements of what makes a composition a "rag." For those interested in American music of this era, I highly recommend Ragtime: A Musical and Cultural History. It is a worthwhile book to add to your collection.
