4.0 out of 5 stars Amazon, some help here!!!
DVD's can be great, or garbage. Evidently there's a DVD of Raid on Entebbe that is garbage. But which?? Reviews were easier and more helpful when there was one DVD of one movie. But once again, now that there is a 2007 re-release of Raid on Entebbe, which reviews belong to which DVD? In particular, have the transfer problems that plague MANY DVDs been cleaned up in...

1.0 out of 5 stars Movie is GREAT! - the DVD is horrible!
All I can say is that it is too bad this is how this excellent movie is treated. I highly recommend the movie and have been waiting a long time for it to be released as a DVD. However, the other reviewer is correct, they did a terrible job of recording this movie onto DVD. The quality is worse than a bad reception TV broadcast and scenes have been cut out! The quality...

But once again, now that there is a 2007 re-release of Raid on Entebbe, which reviews belong to which DVD? In particular, have the transfer problems that plague MANY DVDs been cleaned up in the new release? Somehow, Amazon has GOT to make sure that the reviews for one DVD are not attached to another. If you agree, please click this. Maybe if enough people ask for it, Amazon will clean up its act.

The quality of this DVD is as if someone recorded it on VHS from TV and then copied it onto DVDs in their garage! It is truly lousy work. Again, the movie is excellent and if it were to come out in a DVD format made from the original movie reels, with widescreen as an option, I would still buy a copy. Don't waste your money on this one. The VHS might be better, but you'd get just as much satisfaction if you recorded it off of TV!

1.0 out of 5 stars Record this movie off of TV. It will be better., February 3, 2005
This review is from: Raid on Entebbe (DVD)
I like the movie and was hoping the DVD would be a good purchase. Unfortunately the DVD is the worst quality DVD I have ever seen. It's not even DVD quality. Regular TV broadcasts coming through my DirecTV signal are much sharper than this low quality piece of junk. The picture quality is very dark. I have seen this movie on TV and the darkness of the picture is very noticable. Even worse is that the makers of the DVD cut out complete scenes of the movie! The one star rating is not for the movie itself, but for the extremely bad job done to make this DVD. It sucks! Don't buy it! Record the movie off of TV and then have someone record it onto a DVD for you. It will be much better

5.0 out of 5 stars The Defeat of Terrorism, November 10, 2001

Even with some of the liscence given to a Hollywood production of a significant moment on history, this tale stays close to the facts of one of the most daring raids in Modern Times. This daring rescue of over 100 hostages with only 3 casualties amongst them and one casualty among the Israeli troops (Benjamin Netanyahu's brother, Jonathan) showed the world that terrorism could be defeated. All of the terrorist hijackers were killed as were many of the Ugandan Military.

This raid inspired other daring counterattacks against terrrorism. Less than year later Dutch commandos stormed a train and a school and rescued 160 hostages from terrorists. A few months later German forces liberated 86 hostages aboard a German Airliner that had been hijacked by Iranian terrorists.

An amazing story done justice by a gripping film.

This film should be rereleased on DVD as well as VHS.

This movie was a good report of the actal raid that occured in 1976.An airline jet had been hijacked and commandered to Entebbe
Uganda. All of the Jewish passengers were held hostage by the
German terrorists.Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin put together a
daring raid to rescue the prisoners who were being held by the
terrorists.Under the dark of night the Israeli special forces
swept into Entebbe and pulled off a stunning rescue mission. The hostages were freed with only one Israeli casualty. The Israeli
citizens were flew home to safety. This was a corageous stand and
attack on terrorism. All of this occured on the 200th birthday
of America. An excellent movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Done Account of an Important Historical Event, September 1, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Raid on Entebbe (DVD)
"Raid on Entebbee" was released shortly after are more hastily released version recounting these events came out -- "Victory on Entebbee." It" is hard to say which version is better (I like them both). I suppose this is simply a matter of taste.

This version of the audacious rescue of hostages held when highjackers working for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine boarded and high-jacked an Air France plane stopped in Athens, enroute to Paris from Tel-Aviv, recounts accurately the events and response of the Israeli government to another example of the outrageous terror war being perpetrated against Israel (and now many other countries). It is fast moving, action packed, and has an excellent musical score. Peter Finch stars as Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin, with Charles Bronson portraying General Dan Shomron.
This version, as the previous one, show the difficult Israel Cabinet deliberations held to decide on a top-secret military raid on the Jewish Sabbath, by expert commandos; a difficult and daring operation carried out over 2500 miles from home, rather than give into terrorist demands. The outcome, of course, is well known, with only one commando killed (the operation commander Jonathan Netanyahu, brother of Prime Minister in waiting Benjamin Netayahu), a very small number of hostages, and several several soldiers under the then dictator of Uganda, Idi Amin". Well done and interesting docu-drama that treads the line between true history and historical fiction. Highly recommended to lift the spirits of anyone looking for an actual historical victory over the terrorists.

1.0 out of 5 stars Raid On Entebbe DVD, December 22, 2008
This review is from: Raid on Entebbe (DVD)
Length:: 1:43 Mins

If you have, like me, wasted money on this current commercial release you will understand why people are so angry about this dvd.I have many 'home recorded' films but always prefer to buy a commercial release dvd if there is one, this purchase has left me wondering why i did so on this occasion.I have attached a set of movie clips from my own personal recording (digital TV)you will see that it is far better than this current commercial release !!
Raid On Entebbe is a superb Film ! that goes without saying. Having decided to obtain a 'commercial release' of Raid On Entebbe I was totally disgusted with the quality of the Region 1 (ntsc) issue that i ordered from a company based in the USA. I author and produce DVDs as a small concern and sell to collectors on ebay and ioffer etc and could not believe that a large company could issue a DVD produced to the low standard that the DVD was that i received. The picture is dark and grainy, the quality is so poor the film is totally ruined, and thats apart from losing several minutes from the original film ! The DVD case has what i would describe as low grade artwork, i can live with that if the film itself is good quality but neither the film or artwork are good.I ordered a second DVD from another supplier as the cover design was different and expected a better copy but to no avail, that was rubbish also. I have an excellent quality print of Raid On Entebbe which i obtained some time ago,a home TV broadcast digital recording, the print i have is sharp and the colours true. I in fact took screen stills from both my print and the commercial issue and compared the same pictures side by side, and could not believe the difference i was seing, not only that but the sound quality was much lower on the 'official' release. I author and supply many DVDs to collectors worldwide and produce artwork for all my DVDs so know whats involved, I would regard the official release DVD disc as no better than a coffee cup coaster. Raid on Entebbe however is not the only release to suffer low quality reproduction, it seems the major companies are also churning out some of the older films using very low quality film prints, i have better quality that i recorded 20 years ago on vhs than what some are putting out for sale. I used to believe that a DVD issued by a major DVD company was going to be the best quality available, sadly this is not the case these days. I have hundreds of home recordings which i will keep watching and save money in the meantime if companies keep putting out low quality dvds such as Raid On Entebbe.

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest anti-terrorist action of the 1970s!, November 30, 2006
This review is from: Raid on Entebbe (DVD)
The 1970s were a very dark time, in regard to the rise of terrorist acts committed by radical-leftist groups and their Islamic cohorts. This outstanding movie portrays a true event, in which Isreal's valorous military forces pulled off one of the greatest commando-raids in history! A passenger plane was hijacked by terrorists affiliated with the Red Army Faction and the Palestine Liberation Organization, a flight from Athens to Tel Aviv. The plane was diverted to the heart of Africa, into the very worst of destinations for that time: Idi Amin's Uganda. Amin, possibly the most mentally unbalanced, and bloodiest dictator ever seen in Africa, was a full collaborator with the PLO and RAF. Typical of such groups, the PLO and RAF threatened innocent civilians as a means of attempting to coerce Isreal into freeing some terrorists from Isreali prisons.
Isreal did not stand for this. They deployed several C-130 transport planes loaded with commandos and paratroops, in one of the most daring resue operations of its kind. We may never again see such a brash operation as this one! The rescue was a success! Sadly, there were some casualties amongst the civilian hostages and Isreali troops, but the number was thankfully small. Those who fell died bravely!
This movie should be more well-known than it currently is, especially in our time! Also, Charles Bronson (God rest his soul) is in this film!

2.0 out of 5 stars 2007 edition is terrible, November 20, 2009

This review is from: Raid on Entebbe (DVD)
Raid on Entebbe is a tightly directed film that portrays one of Israel's finest hours - it is a tense story of incredible danger, and heroic rescue. Unfortunately, the 2007 edition is like watching a 1960's television set with terrible reception. Amazon should not sell this version at any price.
