Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

North Koreans hijacking an American aircraft carrier provide an interesting premise and exciting battle scenes for this otherwise flawed thriller.

From Library Journal

Campbell, electrical engineer and former naval officer, presents readers with yet another candidate for inclusion in the technothriller genre pioneered by Tom Clancy's The Hunt for Red October ( LJ 10/15/84). The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Truman is attacked by North Koreans using chemical weapons in an attempt to board and capture an American warship. Lieutenant Paul Simmons, an engineering officer on board the Truman , escapes the effects of the chemical attack and leads his small engineering crew in an attempt to prevent the ship's capture. Campbell's own experience lends realism and excitement to the novel. There is excellent technical detail and an eye for the personal dimension of modern naval warfare. Readers will welcome this latest addition to the technothriller fraternity and eagerly await a successor. Highly recommended for public libraries.

More About the Author

John Campbell is the author of seven novels and one nonfiction book. Using his experience as a U.S. Naval officer, and his extensive experience in the aerospace industry, he began his first novel in 1976 with a story about an attempt by North Korean special forces to hijack a U.S. nuclear aircraft carrier. Fifteen years later Raid On Truman was published in hardbound and paperback and was translated into Japanese for hardbound and paperback sales in Japan. That was the fulfillment of a dream to become a published novelist. He sold a second novel on the heels of the first. COBRA DANE was published in paperback in 1995. A third novel, Sub Zero, quickly followed and was published in 1996 along with publication in Japan.

John has written three more novels, Hidden Sun, These Final Hours, and The Telekinetic Man and a screenplay derived from The Telekinetic Man and is in the process of trying to sell them.

Another novel, Vauclain's Shield, was published by a print-on-demand publisher who only prints copies of the novel once they are sold. This novel may be purchased in hardback or paperback from the publisher's website, www.authorhouse.com. You may have to call to make the purchase.

Another book was published in 2003 just before the Iraqi War. Desert War was a nonfiction look at how the war might be conducted, weapons systems, intelligence gathering, and forces on both sides. While John was the author, his daughter, Christine researched the work.

Influenced initially by the works of Ian Fleming and his brand of no-holds-barred action and intrigue, John has tried to bring to readers that same action elements, but with a large dose of sobering reality. Violence has profound consequences and the characters within John's novels feel all the passion and agony of real people.

Raid On Truman, COBRA DANE, Sub Zero, Vauclain's Shield, These Final Hours, The Telekinetic Man, and Hidden Sun are available on Amazon's Kindle Store. Note that COBRA DANE has for its cover image a picture of the actual COBRA DANE radar on the island of Shemya in the Aleutians. Vauclain's Shield's cover image has a photo of actual reentry vehicles passing through the atmosphere over Kwajalein Atoll in the South Pacific, and Raid On Truman has a real picture of the USS Harry Truman taken by the author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Techno Thriller - True To Life!, October 2, 1998
This review is from: Raid on Truman (Paperback)
After 18 years in the U.S. Navy, it's about time someone has written about the men who run the heart of a ship. Mr. Campbell shows how a true sailor acts in desparate sitiuations. Definitely one of the best. Look out Bond and Clancy.
