Raiders of Old California (1957) Albert C. Gannaway beginning in 1955-56 was a very successful television producer, who produced (in color and with superior sound) the 30 minute filmed version of the weekly "Grand Ole Opry" and around the same time his production company hooked up with Republic Pictures for several well-made, well paced action westerns and other pictures. This could be the best of the lot. Faron Young and Jim Davis were the stars with a mini stock company behind them. Marty Robbins was featured as well. Both Young and Robbins were mega-country music stars at the time, something that Herbert J. Yates of Republic knew when he put money in these productions, and that they would put customers in the seats. This western has plenty of action and a nice story that ties together neatly in the end. Jim Davis is, , as always, larger than life, buttoned down bib-shirt and all. Faron Young, understated but very good as gunslinging Marshal.
