Review

"Chapter by chapter, Karr provides brief yet thorough summaries on the predecessor rail lines of the region and tells what remains of them today. Keeping up with the discussion is made easy with dozens of maps." -- Railfan & Railroad Magazine, September 1995

"Karr has taken those resources and lots more--he is a university reference librarian, so he knows where to find information--to document all the railroad lines in southern New England...Anyone interested in New England railroads should have this book." --Trains Magazine, October 1995

5.0 out of 5 stars Very thorough research, February 6, 1999

Mr. Karr leaves no stone unturned in this scienctific analysis of the regions railroad lines. Mr. Karr has gone and "uncovered the iron" in places that even natives would never have believed that an active line was ever present.

This review is from: The Rail Lines of Southern New England: A Handbook of Railroad History (New England Rail Heritage Series) (Paperback)
This book is essential for anyone interested in the lost railroads of MA, CT,and RI. The details regarding track mileages and ownership changes are interesting and sometimes the author puts in good pictures and tells readers where they can find certain segments or tunnels etc... that may be still around. The book is also helpful for stock certificate collectors that may be collecting stuff from defunct lines.

Very clear, succinct history of all southern New England railroads. Helpful maps. I ordered the book because of an interest in a few tracks near me, but ended up reading almost the entire book.
