Purchased from Hobbytown USA, first set I've purchased and have already expanded. Controller is very basic, doesn't control sounds of the locomotive, even if you have a loco that is sound equipped. It has a few sounds that come from the control box itself such as a horn, bell, defect detector chatter. That's it. the GP9 BNSF loco was a little jerky out of the box, and became much worse within a couple of months. In the last week the light stopped working. I purchased a Bachmann gp50 the same night that works flawlessly. The Walthers loco has directional lighting, but in reverse there is no light so the loco is dark in reverse. I have contacted the company, and am mailing (at my expense) the loco back to them to be serviced. I do not yet know if it will be fixed or replaced. The rolling stock is ok, but the flatbed couplers do not work well, and frequently uncouples itself on curves. In hindsight, I wish I'd purchased any other set besides this one. eventually I will purchase a digitrax zephyr and use this control box as a booster. The track in the box is bachmann's ez track with black track bed. I am slowly converting to Atlas code 100 flex track. with some work they will connect to each other. when you expand to the ez turnouts, you will be sorry. They are terrible, many derailments due to the turnouts. The dcc engines are easy to program with the box. Consisting (MU) can not be achieved with this controller. the bottom line: If you are buying this set for a child, or never plan to expand, this will work ok. However, if you are planning to do advanced things with the locos (sound, MU, etc) this controller will NOT meet your needs. Working with flex track is very easy, so do not start with the EZ track - start with the flex track. Eventually I will have replaced the control box, loco, and track. so I essentially paid $200 for some cheap rolling stock. I would have expected better from a big name such as Walthers. Disappointed.

Not a bad deal for an entry level dcc set. And the ez track makes it nice for set up. The power pack seems to operate all my dcc engines just fine too. If you add it all up.....you can't beat the price....but again, this set is an entry level dcc set up.

I bought this set over Xmas time. I chose this one because I wanted HO scale with sounds. It had many flaws. One of the pieces of track was warped, with an upright bend, and whenever the train went over it the train set would de-couple (cars come apart). Walthers did send me a replacement track piece.

Also my set has a power/digital 'hiccup' (that causes the train to kind-of stop and restart) at random times, this also causes the train to de-couple. I contacted Walthers about these issues and even mailed the digital box and loco back to them. They replaced the loco, but the 'hiccup' problem continues. The 'programable' sounds on this digital box, are kind of lame. They sound ok, but only the 'running' noise runs automatically by itself. The rest of the sounds; horn, bell, crew chatter have to be sounded by manually pressing the respective buttons. This was disappointing to me since 'programable' sounds implies that all the sounds could be automatically run when running the train set. I asked Walthers reps about this and they said thats the way it works...

Im new to this hobby so Im not sure if this next issue applies only to this set or to all sets, or just digital sets. I have to clean the rails and loco wheels OFTEN! Like, every couple of hours of run time. If I dont clean often, this set really has running/power problems! I have my train set on the floor, so I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the cleaning or not.

I will never buy anything from or made by Walthers again. This train set has really been disappointing.
