Editorial Reviews

Review

Imagine gliding along on ribbons of steel, through breathtaking open space, enjoying the pristine air, the abundant wildlife, and the silence. Your ride is as smooth as glass - and there's no traffic. Your hands are free to take pictures or enjoy your lunch. Your path is never steep. Where there's a hill, you go around it, or through a tunnel. Sound like a cyclist's dream? You're not dreaming - you're RAILBIKING!

For more than 100 years people worldwide have been enjoying the sport of railbiking. The 1908 Sears catalog offered a railbike attachment for $5.45. In Europe today there are dozens of active railbike rental facilities using abandoned railroads.

This book gives an overview of the history, current status and future prospects for one of the world's most beautiful sports: RAILBIKING. Construction methods are discussed and many patented railbike designs are presented.

RAILBIKE provides an excellent overview of the sport of railbiking. -- From the publisher

This review is from: Railbike: Cycling on Abandoned Railroads (Paperback)
This book has some use for railbikers who want to know about railbikers and their construction challenges 20 years ago. There are several stories about individual railbikers; probably the most insightful is about a railbiker who got fed up with being caught or having bad falls - and switched to handcars. Better research today is available on the internet covering commercial developments in Sweden, Germany and New Zealand on similar but safer railriding vehicles.
