I loved this book. I learned about history and what really happened when Americans were building railroads back then. I would reccomend it to anyone else.

Good resource for students,

My son used Railroads of the West for a 5th grade history project. He ended up relying on this book for the bulk of his research. Afterward, he begged me for a trip to the railroad museum near our home! Magram's book puts human faces and life stories to the history of an American industry.

If only all textbooks were written this way. The book describes history through personal experiences. Sidebars are very useful.

Magram's vivid description and anecdotal presentation make for an excellent learning tool. Layout is coffee table-style, but the contents of each page leave young readers well informed. Includes glossary of bold terms.
