Book Description

June 1, 2009

This wonderfully illustrated book celebrates Golden State railroading, offering a colorful look at California’s legendary railroads, the men who built and ran them, and the engineering feats that made them possible, and the legacy those railroads have left in the form of the state’s historic tourist roads and museums, as well as modern railroad operations.

In addition to examining historic railroads irrevocably linked with California, most notably the Southern Pacific, Railroads of California features coverage of excursion roads and museums such as Railtown 1897 State Historic Park and the famed California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. Also included is coverage of modern “real” railroad sites and operations such Donner Pass, Feather River Canyon, Tehachapi and Cajon passes, the railroad hub of Barstow, scenic and state-sponsored Amtrak service along the Pacific Coast, and the iconic Los Angeles Union Station. With marvelous modern color photography, historic black-and-white imagery, and a specially commissioned map, the book is a historical, pictorial tour by rail of one of the nation’s top railroading states.

From the Inside Flap

Thanks to its marvelous scenery, large population centers, and rich heritage, California is one of the top railroading locations in the United States—and a favorite destination for railfans. In this generously illustrated guide to California railroading past and present, author Brian Solomon offers both a colorful celebration of Golden State rails and a practical overview for enthusiasts planning a visit.

Solomon begins by exploring the histories of California’s major railroads—their roles in shaping a nation’s industry, the men who built and operated them, and the engineering feats that made them possible. This historical primer is followed with a look at California’s modern freight operations and descriptions of notable sites for viewing this thriving industry today, including Donner Pass, Feather River Canyon, Tehachapi Loop, and Cajon Pass. Solomon also provides a thorough overview of California’s role as a national leader in passenger rail service, describing various commuter, light-rail, inter-city, streetcar, and cable car lines and infrastructure throughout the state. Finally, Solomon examines the preservation of California’s rail history, providing descriptions and imagery of major steam, diesel, and electric tourist roads, and some of its remarkable railroad museums where readers can relive this important past, including the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.

With stunning contemporary photographs, archival historical images, and specially commissioned maps of Northern and Southern California, Railroads of California is a handsome illustrated history covering a key chapter in American railroading—and an indispensable volume for railfans interested in that dream trip to the Golden State.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of the Railroads, January 23, 2011
This review is from: Railroads of California: The Complete Guide to Historic Trains and Railway Sites (Hardcover)
The Railroads of California by Brian Solomon provides a great overview of the history and modern day state of railroads in California.

Growing up in Southern California near San Diego in the 1970's and 1980's I was interested in a chance to learn about what has happened since I moved east in 1991.

The book starts with a history of the railroads of California starting with the Central Pacific. It continues to discuss the history of the "Big Four" railroads of California, the Southern Pacific, Santa Fe, Union Pacific, and Western Pacific. Following that is a discussion of the historic shortlines which have served the Golden State.

I really enjoyed the coverage of modern railroads in California including the various commuter services which now serve the state. I've had a chance to ride CALTRAIN near San Jose, but the other ones were new to me.

The book concludes with a great review of the major railroad museums of California. It is great to see how some of favorites such as the Orange Empire and the State Museum in Sacramento have grown since I last saw them 20 years ago.

As the author mentions, entire books have been written about the topics covered briefly in this book. It doesn't give a lot of details but does a great job of showing the state of railroads as of 2008 in California.
