Railway disasters usually make the headlines of the world's press, largely because of their rarity. This is the first survey to cover the subject on a global scale and documents all significant accidents that have occurred throughout the world since 1900. Despite the constant awareness of safety by nearly all rail systems, accidents still happen from time to time, some with spectacular consequences, such as trains going off bridges into swollen rivers, further hampering rescue attempts. The attitude of the media to railway accidents is discussed, as is the role and achievements of the British Railway Inspectorate in establishing the causes of accidents, and advising on the steps to be taken to avoid any recurrence of the circumstances. An appendix summarises all major passenger train accidents 1990-1994, with details of many major and catastrophic disasters from around the world that are not generally known in the UK.
