More About the Author

Chris grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, where the charm of train travel has always lured him. His colourful career with VIA Rail spans ten years, starting in 1997 when he first worked as an Activity Coordinator aboard the Canadian.

His productive stint with the Crown Corporation culminated in January 2008, where he held the position of Product Specialist for the company's Marketing Planning Department. Over the years, Chris mastered the fine details of the railway system, amassing a cornucopia of railroad facts and personal insights into life aboard the trains. He has extensively traversed Canada aboard VIA Rail and on some train services in North America, covering some 500,000 kilometres (over 300,000 miles!), and still counting.

Chris established Way of The Rail Publishing in 2002, in response to the growing demand for printed guides on railway journeys across Canada. He published the Railway Map Guide to British Columbia and Canadian Rockies, a pioneer in travel publication, and largely contributed to the development of the latest and comprehensive Canada by Train Guidebook.

This review is from: Railway Map Guide: Across Canada (Hardcover)
This map is an excellent companion to the author's Canada by Train: The Complete VIA Rail Travel Guide. While the book provides the detailed information, this map gives a good sense of the overall distances between towns, and how developed or isolated the various sections of the route are. I found it very useful for preparing for my trip on the Canadian, and many people on the train wanted to borrow it for a while.

I found that I didn't use it much on the train, because the book provided much more information with exact mileposts, but I was very happy to have it. We first took an AMTRAK train from New York City to Toronto, and it was humbling to see on the map how little we'd travelled compared to crossing Canada. It is a huge country!

There is a similar map by the same author that covers just the Rockies section of the route. The scale isn't much different than this map, and it has about the same level of detail, so you don't need to buy both, but I don't regret having both. The author did a great job and the map is extremely well constructed, sturdy, usable but not too bulky.
