An unusual tale of love, marriage and conflict,
By Arion Potts (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rain Forest (Mass Market Paperback)
Olivia Manning creates a masterful portrait of love and relationships in a new environment. It's a well-written tale, with an unusual plot. It's especially interesting in how it portrays the main characters settling into a closed, exclusive - yet declining - expatriate community that refuses to change. The conflict between the stodgy 'British Empire' colonial expats, and the newly arrived, mostly post-colonial couple is very interesting as well.I've read this a few years ago, and still think of it from time to time. I'm a fan of all of Manning's works, and I should pick this up again. It's a bit sad how under-appreciated Manning was during her time. She's one of the mid-twentieth century's best novelists and deserves a look today! |
