From Library Journal

Katanaquat, known as the Rain from God, is a proud warrior of the Narragansett tribe. He lives according to the Narragansett traditions, taking more than one wife and believing in many gods. However, the changes occurring in 17th-century America threaten his way of life. At first, Katanaquat is resentful of the encroachments being made upon his people by the British colonists, but he alters his opinion upon meeting preacher Roger Williams. Introduced to a different way of life, Katanaquat converts to Christianity and becomes known as Jacob. Ammerman's deft way with characterization makes Katanaquat come alive. The portrayal of Native American life is assured and believable, making this first novel a solid glimpse into a rarely portrayed aspect of American history.

This book is extremely educational, exciting and enjoyable. The back of the book has the historical facts and there is an index to help were needed with some of the Indian words and items of there everyday life. I have friends that are of Indian descent and this is an easy book for me to recommend to them. It is also a powerful ministry tool. For Christians or historians, or anyone that likes a good adventure book. This series is it. Volume 2 is "Ransom" and Volume 3 is "Longshot".

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book of Indian Life, February 3, 2011
A Kid's Review
In the 1600's, the Pequot and the Narragansett were at war. Katanaquat had his own personal war with Uncas for scalping Assoko, his friend and cousin. This personal war became all-out war, Narragansett against Pequot, nearly wiping out the Uncas' Pequot. Several things stopped the war: the Pequot were starving, the Narragansett were dying from the plague, and Katanaquat became a Christian, learning that we are to love our enemies.

4.0 out of 5 stars great historical fiction, August 3, 2001

This review is from: The Rain from God, Book 1: Cross & the Tomahawk (Paperback)
I very much enjoyed this book. The author did a wonderful job bringing this period of our country to life. The story spans the period when Dutch and English settlers entered into the reality of the Narraganset indians. It is a touching story of a man named Rain from God from his youth, to the coming of the white man, to God calling his name. Beautifully written.
