4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, eclectic mix of coffee-shop favorites, May 20, 2003

The CD itself is a rather short mix of light favorites and classic blues and jazz. Is it a coincidence that Iko Iko later made it into the Tom Cruise produced Mission Impossible 2? Etta James' classic is probably owned by half the world already. The rest are nice to have in as background filler while you're doing something, like writing a review for instance.

I bought this CD, however, for the two songs "On the Road" and "Vegas" composed by Hans Zimmer. The first is a unique, airy instrumental that's slighly reminiscent of Jan Hammer's Miami Vice scores. The latter conveys power and excitement and it enhances the movie so masterfully that I believe it was the breakthrough hit that helped make him one of the most prolific and sought-after movie composers today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Natural high, May 28, 2000

This soundtrack is incredible, especially for traveling in the car. The Iko Iko rendition is excellent as are several other of the tracks. I highly reccomend it to anyone who is unsure of what type of music to listen to next. It's an instant mood lifter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Cruisin' Music, January 21, 2000
This review is from: Rain Man: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
There's alot of goodies on this soundtrack, new and old. "Iko Iko" and "Nathan Jones" I remember from the 60's, these versions are just as good as the originals. "Dry Bones" by the Delta Rhythn Boys is straight out of the Ink Spots era, by now everyone should be familiar with "At Last" by Etta James, it's been used in a few commercials. Aaron Neville's version of "Stardust" is very haunting and relaxing, and if you're listening in your car I dare you to keep your foot off the gas while "Las Vegas/End Credits" is playing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack Masterpiece, December 10, 2000

After hunting high-and-low for this soundtrack for many years, I finally discovered it at "Amazon". This CD is one of those which literally increases the movie's appeal (quite like the soundtracks to "Saturday Night Fever" and "Flashdance" did). My ultimate favourite (which is only available on one other CD that I know of) is Jaluka/Savuka's "Scatterlings of Africa" - adding a true South African pop 'feel' to this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, January 31, 2000

Love this album--have been looking for it for years. Used to listen to a roommate's copy; once that roommate was gone, the album wasn't in stores anymore. Particularly for driving long distances--absolutely the best.

love the soundtrack, but i am missing more of the tracks composed by Hans Zimmer. Why in this day and age can we not buy all the music used in this movie?

5.0 out of 5 stars The beginning of a great career, July 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rain Man: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Hans Zimmer arrived with this score, and rightly so. The man knows how to make a movie "move" like no other. There's a haunting quality to this score that I say is the reason RAIN MAN won Best Picture. Track 7 - Leaving Wallbrook, is an all-time great accomplishment for modern scores, it created a new sound that others would rush to copy. Zimmer has an amazing knack for using synthesizers, and can create cues of unbelievable power and scope (just listen to CRIMSON TIDE or LION KING).

He is unmatched in this regard and RAIN MAN is where it all began for him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Childhood Favorite, March 26, 2006
This review is from: Rain Man: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I supposed I should not have been watching this movie when I was nine years old, but I remember seeing it several times via HBO. More importantly, my father bought the soundtrack and we used to listen to it over & over in the car. The songs stuck with me for years, and every know and then I'll hear something out of context and I'll be taken back to roadtrips with my family. It's something that I won't think about for ages, but when I'm reminded of it, I can't believe I don't still have a copy of the soundtrack.

I remember it had quiet and comforting songs mixed in with songs you could sing along too. It's perfect for driving and just having on in the background.

5.0 out of 5 stars An eclectic treat!, December 1, 2005
By
This review is from: Rain Man: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I bought this CD because I needed a good version of Iko Iko. After listening to 5 or 6 versions I liked this one the best although I wish the vocals were a little crisper. What came as a wonderful surprise is that I fell in love with just about every song on the CD, particularly Scatterlings of Africa, the first Hans Zimmer song, and Beyond the Blue Horizon. I actually really enjoy every song, (except Stardust), and highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys a wide variety of music.

The perfect complementary soundtrack to a 5 star movie. All of the tracks are great for turning on the stereo, putting the disc in the player, and kicking back and listening to some enoyable and relaxing music, a delight!
