Jim Dodge - A Tremendous Talent, January 31, 2007
This review is from: Rain on the River (Paperback)
I first saw Mr. Dodge recite his poetry and prose at a reading in Humboldt County to benefit a local school that was damaged by the big earthquake back in 92'. It was a magical evening made all the more significant by the fact that the featured reader was the living legend, Gary Snyder. This was the first time I had heard Jim's material and was completely blown away, particularly by the pieces The Cookie Jar and The Banker. I read two of his novels in the years since (Not Fade Away and Fup), but always longed to get my hands on a retrospective collection of his poetry and prose. I recently discovered this collection and checked it out from the local university library. It was like discovering lost treasure. I'll now be purchasing my own copy. Buy this if you truly want to hear one the great voices of contemporary poetry.
