Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

PW praised "Narahashi's bright appealing watercolors" and noted that "Unlike author and artist's previous collaborations, this gentle picture book forgoes lilting rhythms and rhymes in favor of a prose-like text brimming with onomatopoeic sounds." Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-- The various sounds that the rain makes are explored in this poetic picture book. A young child hears the "first fat raindrops" fall on "the soft summer dust of a country road." She sees the tiny holes the drops make, and smells the wet dust. As the storm progresses, the text fine tunes readers' ears to the different sounds of rain on umbrellas, ponds, roofs, and highways. Such vivid sensory images have immediate appeal for even the youngest read-aloud audience. Equally appealing are the watercolor illustrations that follow the young girl and her dog on their rainy-day wanderings that eventually lead to home, supper, and bed. Bright yellow and green dominate the pages, providing the perfect backdrop for the brown-limbed girl in her red galoshes and flowered dress. The freedom, joy, and warmth of the illustrations make this book a pure delight. A perfect rainy-day read-aloud that will be hard to keep on the shelf. --Carolyn Polese, Gateway Community School, Arcata, CA

The watercolors beautifully portray a rainy day as a joyous event for a darling little girl and her dog. The text gives you the feeling that you can hear the rain, and I especially love the page showing a dreamy little girl sitting by the fire saying to herself, "I'm getting very sleepy here." Every page makes you feel like you're right there. My 14 month old adores this book, as do I! It's meant for older children, but even a baby can appreciate lines that begin, "Ploomp, ploomp, ploomp..." and "Ping, Ping, Pingading, ping."

This is a beautifully illustrated book to read to your children while curled up on the couch, in your favorite chair, or at bedtime. The author brings home the sounds and feel of rain so delightfully that no matter what the temperature outside, you'll wish it were raining!

Rain Talk is a book I read every spring in Kindergarten. Mary Serfoso's books are a favorite of my students, and I like the quality of these books because the text is definitely out of the ordinary and the illustrations are beautiful. She also writes several other books that we read, such as Who Said Red? In this book, the rain makes noises that the children can imitate, and there are plenty of action words that bring the story and illustrations to life. We have a lot of fun imitating the sounds and making up new sounds. We also have a talk about onomatopoeia, which is a "big" word that the children can show off with. I have a song called Onomatopoeia that they also love to sing. Young children always like this book, and most of her other books as well. She's fun!

I looked for a copy of this out-of-print book for years. So happy to have found a copy in good shape on Amazon. Only complaint was that the shipping package was not adequate to prevent a little water damage to the cover of the book. Some bubble wrap would have solved that issue. Still, so pleased to have it!
