Review
Rain When You Want Rain is a subtle and pleasing first full-length collection. Johnson-Miller has the great gift of knowing that by not insisting on trying to say everything, she finds, over and over again, a way to say just what is required. Her poems, in Shakespeare's words, by indirections find directions out. It has been a long time since I have encountered a poet who writes so well about life's absurdities, or who can infuse her lines with such a winning sense of eros. --Richard Tillinghast
What I love most about Betsy Johnson-Miller's work is perhaps best exemplified in a line from her poem, "The liturgy of the table," where she reluctantly acknowledges her mother's influence by writing "to love in our religion is to never say anything." But something must always be said, and in
Rain When You Want Rain, Johnson-Miller searches for the necessary voice in contrasts. This collection is a beautifully crafted exploration of the fragile grace earned when that voice is found. --Bob Gray
