Absolutely brilliant,
This review is from: Rainbow (Audio CD)
I bought this CD a few weeks ago and I literally have to listen to this everyday. It is truly amazing. The first track is perhaps the best opening song on an album I've heard in a long time. This is truly a melding of two musical entities. Do not expect much of the "harsh" Boris or the "weak" Kurihara (a la Sunset nights). This is a masterpiece of distorted psychedelia, chugging in the right places, mellow in others.

This album is a beautiful, psychedelic work of art between Boris and Michio Kurihara. From the opening track, this album is pure musical wonderment. It shows just how versatile Boris can be. If you haven't heard it yet, give it a try.

An Unexpected Album From Boris,
By
This review is from: Rainbow (Audio CD)
This album is definitely a highlight in Boris' discography in my view. The typical drone and noise aesthetic is abandoned in favor of a psychedelic blend of intricate, slow, and meandering songs with piercing guitar solos layered on top.
And it is the piercing sound of the guitar that makes this album 4 stars. While I do like it, sometimes the stark contrast between the rest of the music and the guitar seems like the album does not quite fit together properly. Despite the tone of the guitar, this is one of my most-listened-to albums of late, and I definitely recommend it to fans of Boris (provided they understand it does not quite sound like other Boris) as well as people more accustomed to psychedelic and alternative music.

Mellow Boris,

Bori with Kurahara Michio, the guitarist frorm the legendary band Ghost. Opening track "Rafflesia" has long, fantastic, wiry guitar wails. I don't know how he does it. "Rainbow" is pretty dull, but it has great soloing in some of those weird distorted effects. It is one of the rare songs sung by Wata, the band's gorgeous female guitarist, and may be the album's standout track. It's here that the album starts to sound kind of like a Sonic Youth album with Eric Clapton as guest. "Starship Narrator" is robotic, "My Rain" is a beautiful instrumental,
"Shine" a mournful dirge. "You Laughed Like A Watermark" is laconic with a strange Neil Young guitar solo. "Fuzzy Reactor" has an appropriate name, and it is fuzzy. "Sweet No. 1"' is a barn burner and a lot of fun as it is full of screaming solos. "And I Want" is more sweet pretty music like "My Rain." Many of the songs are given the Merzbow treatment and heavied-up on the amazing "Rock Dream" release.
