5.0 out of 5 stars Solid conclusion to a great sequence., July 5, 2008
By
I was really pretty disappointed by Band of Gypsys, which was a surprise, given how much I have enjoyed the rest of the series. Given that, I approached Rainbow Bridge with a little bit of anxiety because as the last book in the sequence (at least, to date) I wanted it to be something really special.

And, dear readers, it was something special. If you have followed the adventures of The Rock and Roll Reich as far as this last book then almost nothing will surprise you about the directions that Jones chooses for her characters. Older, wiser but still themselves-- Ax, Sage and Fiorinda take on the new world order and come to their own kind of peace with the new rulers of England.

As with the rest of these books, the goal of these characters isn't a perfect happy ending. These three are looking for joy to go with their compromise, and they'll take it imperfect rather than not take it at all. There is something about creating a safe space to live their lives and something else about marrying questions about gender/politics/national identity into a strange mix of utopianism and unvarnished reality. These "near future" books are somewhere between science fiction and fantasy. Interestingly, the more fantastical elements are never the point of the stories, but more elements in the tapestry that allow Jones to work out the characters and ideas.

Start with Bold As Love. End here. The entire sequence is well worth reading. I plan to circle back and pick up Jones' earlier work which is (unfortunately) largely out of print.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader, August 16, 2007
Chinese invasion fifth man isn't. Triumvirate terror weapon takedown deal.

Rainbow Bridge suffers a little from being overly long, as does the whole series I think. A few too many pointless scenes here and there. This book being 370 odd pages of your small sixties typeface type print.

Following on from the end of the last Ax has to come to an accomodation with the Chinese leadership, and the various militant factions in part of Britain to stop more war and slaughter. While this is going on, Fiorinda is pregnant. Sage is mostly along for the ride and assistance, with a bit of tech thrown in.

The dullish midsection is redeemed by the latter part of the book, though.
