The girl with the striped moonboots and royal-blue epaulets is back from the 1980s to save the world for a new generation of young viewers. This time the gal, her rainbow-tailed horse Starlite, and her sidekick sprite Twink must face down a selfish princess who has stolen the biggest diamond in the universe, preventing light from reaching the world, and sending earth into a neverending winter. (Don't try to justify the plot from a scientific standpoint.) The rerelease of this 1985 production marks the relaunching of the Rainbow Brite franchise, following the successful returns of other '80s era cartoon characters like Care Bears and My Little Pony. Nostalgic young parents will revel in the big hair and big shoulders, and little ones will just enjoy the pretty horses and the colors. This 85-minute movie may also have some appeal to young males as the secondary hero is a boy with a robotic horse. (Ages 3 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs

Product Description

5.0 out of 5 stars 80's CARTOONS LIVE ON! Rainbow Brite is the way to go!!, June 26, 2001

My Goodness! Just when I thought that this movie was out of print I come across this wonderful link at Amazon.com! Oh, how I could kiss them!

If you are looking for an 80s cartoon to bring back the good ol' days in animation you can stop here and click the "Add to Shopping Cart" button, because you have found THE most perfect 80s cartoon of all time. People of all ages, male or female will love this movie! Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer is full of colorful animation (excuse the pun) and great songs that just make you want to get up and dance like it's the 80s all over again.

Rainbow Brite must deal with her greatest adversary yet: an evil Princess who wants to take the greatest light in the world and keep it to herself, thus causing all of the color to disappear from the world. (no light = no colors!) This is an even bigger job than trying to fight Murky or Lurky! Along the way, Rainbow Brite meets a new friend and she learns that working together really does help. Only friendship and unselfishness can save the day!

This is a rare treat to find on the web, so if you really must have an 80s cartoon to keep you going, THIS IS A MUST HAVE! It definitely made my day (as it will over and over on my television set for years to come ^_~)!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, December 22, 1999

I love this movie! Ever since I was a little kid I've liked rainbow brite. And now at 15 it's no different than when i was 5. I definitely recommend watching this movie. All the rainbow kids and the little sprites were very cute and it actually had a good storyline. If anyone is reading this and you havent seen this great movie i'll give a little review for you :) Rainbow Brite is getting ready to bring spring to earth, when she tries to do this, her star sprinkles don't work. So she goes to find out the source of this problem was. When she goes back to Rainbowland she finds a strange horse there who is looking for her help, she goes with him... that's all i'm going to say, so watch it! :)

3.0 out of 5 stars not sexist, January 27, 2005

It's missing the point dramatically to say that this film depicts girls as useless. There's a fairly typical boy/girl rivalry depicted, yes, but I don't believe anyone who watched the film from the start could reasonably think that girls are depicted as useless or powerless in it.

I was able to figure out that the Krys character's opinion of girls was biased and unjustified (and, ultimately, proven wrong within the film) when I was eight. Today I'm a self-described feminist and I still think "Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer" presents a number of positive and powerful role models for young girls. I'd happily recommend it.
