Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up This informational book is an interview-based discussion of the social and emotional experiences of members of interracial familieswhether natural or adoptive. The usual dilemmas of adolescents' search for self-identity, dating and friendships, and peer relationships are assessed by biracial teenagers, some of whom feel that they enjoy the best of both worlds. Parents discuss problems related to choosing neighborhoods in which interracial families are at least reasonably welcomed and received. Revealing discussions are provided on legal and other ramifications of single-race children and their different race ``second'' parent. The longstanding issue of transracial adoption is viewed from the perspectives of noted sociologists, psychologists, adoptive parents, foster parents, and the children, some of whom are now adults. The Beckers' All Blood Is Red. . .All Shadows Are Dark! (Seven Shadows Pr, 1984) is one interracial family's documentary of experiences and responses. Rosenberg's Living in Two Worlds (Lothrop, 1986) presents views from several families with children in a picture-story book format. Rainbow Effect is enriched by its list of resource organizations for interracial families and its bibliography of suggested reading on the subject. A worthwhile resource. Helen E. Williams, Univ . of Maryland, College Park
