1.0 out of 5 stars Don't do it!!!!, May 2, 2009

This review is from: Rainbow Heirloom Mix Tomato - 50 Seeds
I bought a ton of seed from these people last spring, and initially gave them a good review b/c they shipped so quickly. I had no idea that NOTHING I bought from them would so much as SPROUT! I was horribly disappointed and wasted a LOT of money on these heirloom seeds, when I should have just gone to my good old standby, Baker Creek. Not one thing even attempted to grow, and I'm an ok gardener! Big waste of time, money, and energy. Will NEVER buy from Hirts again. EVER.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rainbow Heirloom Mix Tomatoes, July 1, 2010

This review is from: Rainbow Heirloom Mix Tomato - 50 Seeds
The things I didn't like about this product:

- out of 50 seeds, only 19 germinated and survived long enough to be planted, and of those, 3 have no tomatoes at all on them.

-seeds were all mixed together, so I still have no idea what I have in my garden. It would have been helpful to know which were which, at least with the Aunt Ruby's German Green, so we would have known to pick the first tomato to ripen on that plant, rather than leave it on the vine to rot while we were waiting for it to get darker. We didn't know that the German Green would get any sort of a pink or red blush when it was ripe, so we assumed that that tomato was one of the red or pink varieties.

- some of the tomatoes pictured on the seed packet were not at all among the varieties that were inside the packet. I expected the green ones to actually be shaped like the long oval green ones on the packet, which further added to my confusion and led to the wasted German Green.

The only positive is that the 16 plants that actually made it to the garden and actually have fruit on them are doing very well. They seem hardy, and produce well (if they would only ripen, now!), they seem to be fairly resistant to disease and pests, so that I had to do very little in the way of pest control and pampering. They have all grown tall and many are so large that they have outgrown the cages and the vines have started breaking and actually taking root on their own. But still, 16 healthy, producing plants, that I don't even know what variety or color most are yet, out of a package of 50 seeds is pretty disappointing.

Editing to add new information-

Of the plants 16 plants, over half were of the same variety, but I couldn't determine whether they were Omar's Red Lebanese or Brandywines, or for all I knew, they were neither. At least these plants were healthy, produced a lot of very large fruit and tasted good. I would just like to have had a name to go with the variety.

When the tomatoes began to ripen after I originally wrote this review, I found that there were two plants that were not among the kinds that were advertised on the package. One turned out to be a Big Rainbow (which I did like, even if it was one of the two lowest producers in the garden) and the other I haven't been able to identify at all. It was a small-medium, sweet tasting, pink tomato with an odd shape. It was shaped sort of like an acorn squash; slightly pleated, usually with a lightly pointed bottom. It was a pretty tomato, but a bit mild for my taste. I have searched the internet hoping to find the name of this particular variety but haven't found it. If anyone could tell me, I would love to know.

While I didn't mind getting the Big Rainbow or even the unnamed tomato, it irritated me even more because further shows that I really have no idea if I actually got what I ordered or not. I can't identify with any real certainty most of the varieties that came in the package and clearly, some seeds were not as advertised.

I will say that the small yellow ones (that I can only assume were the Golden Sunshine as I didn't get a real description of what they were supposed to look like other than 'yellow') were very, very prolific, began producing early and continued to produce well into the fall and had a good, unique flavor. I found myself a little overwhelmed with these. However, there was one that produced a slightly larger tomato that was the exact same color as these, that I am guessing is Djana's Golden Girl that was supposed to be 'orange'. The two or three tomatoes I got from this plant (most rotted on the vine before ripening) tasted different from the smaller yellow ones in addition to the difference in size and yield, so I am assuming this was not the same variety.

While I was very pleased with the 'bonus' of the Big Rainbow, I still couldn't feel justified in giving even a slightly higher rating. My recommendation to beginner gardeners (who will most likely be the ones considering this mix) would be to pass this one up. Instead, ask around among more experienced gardeners in your area and find out what kinds of tomatoes they like, narrow it down to a few specific varieties, and just buy packets of those specific varieties rather than this hit or miss, confusing mess. This packet of inferior seeds wasn't worth the effort and aggravation.

5.0 out of 5 stars tomato seeds, February 10, 2011
This review is from: Rainbow Heirloom Mix Tomato - 50 Seeds
I ordered these without knowing anything either about the seeds or the company. The seeds arrived quickly and while I at first was concerned that there were too few to work with--about 20 for the rarer varieties--they are very vigorous and probably more than 90% sprouted. I'm very happy with the result.
