3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the Rainbow Fairies
I started reading the Rainbow Fairies books to my 6 yr old daughter this summer. She loved the first series and we started on the Weather Fairies. While waiting on the second book from the library I bought this since it was just one book to bridge the time while we waited for the next Weather Fairy book. 4.0 out of 5 stars Kirsty and Rachel save the day... again!, March 10, 2009
This review is from: Rainbow Magic Special Edition: Shannon the Ocean Fairy (Mass Market Paperback)
"Shannon The Ocean Fairy"
by Daisy Meadows
(Scholastic-Little Apple, 2009)
----------------------------------------------
The "Rainbow Magic" series continues with this latest installment, in which best-friends-for-life Kirsty and Rachel are called upon once more to help out the folks of Fairyland, this time to find three magic pearls that they use to control the ocean tides and whatnot. Yet again, the grouchy Jack Frost is their nemesis, and his ineffectual, easily thwarted goblins are in charge of guarding the magical items, and once again the girls -- aided by a cheerful magical fairy -- outwit the witless goblins and save the day.

This popular series has one great strength -- its readability -- and a few notable limitations. The two girls -- unfailingly cheerful, optimistic and polite -- don't have distinct personalities, and the basic plot of the stories is always the same: out of spite, Jack Frost steals some some magical item(s) and the girls get it back, after a series of mildly suspenseful adventures. Jack and his goblins have become dull, repetitious adversaries, but the scenarios change, and gradually the writing has gotten a little more complex and engaging. This time around they go undersea and visit shipwrecks and coral reefs, play with dolphins and sea lions, and they easily defeat the goofy goblins. Not much new here, but kids who already like the series will enjoy this volume as well. The equivalent of three "Rainbow Magic" books, bound together as one volume, so you don't have to buy any additional books in order to get the whole story. And again, the series provides action without much sense of risk or trauma -- a good option for kids who don't want stories that are too upsetting or complex. 5.0 out of 5 stars Shannon's in trouble!, January 16, 2012
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Rainbow Magic Special Edition: Shannon the Ocean Fairy (Mass Market Paperback)
This book, really brought entertainment and exciting situations to my reading. When you read this story I bet you that you won't be disappointed. This story is basically about best friends, Rachel and Kirsty helping "Shannon The Ocean Fairy" get her three magical pearls back and guess who stole the pearls? (JACK FROST) he's always is up to some destruction! But he can't do all this terrible stuff alone, he has his mischievous green goblins to help him out here's what they mostly do: spy, snatch and cackle when there done. very enjoyable book! Perfect for anyone.

I started reading the Rainbow Fairies books to my 6 yr old daughter this summer. She loved the first series and we started on the Weather Fairies. While waiting on the second book from the library I bought this since it was just one book to bridge the time while we waited for the next Weather Fairy book. Well, my daughter is just not that interested in this one. We've had it two weeks and haven't finished it yet. Usually we finish a book in 2-3 days. These books are very similar from one to the next. Always Jack Frost is up to no good and Rachel & Kirsty help their fairy friends to return things to normal. I like them because they are generally positive and not real scary. Each Fairy has her own fashion and special gifts. They are great books for young girls learning to read or to read on their own. I've already ordered Holly the Christmas Fairy Special Edition but think I will stick to the 7 series books from now on. There are so many series to chose from, and I think they are much more positive than Junie B Jones books.
