4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all..., June 9, 2003
This review is from: Rainbow Man (Audio CD)
Jeff Bates obviously has some talent. His debut single, "The Love Song" (a highlite of this album) shows us that. Maybe we can even say he's the next Conway Twitty...no doubt Bates would appreciate that. Because not only does he sound amazingly like Twitty, and not only does he seem to almost worship him with every song, but he WRITES like Twitty did--songs that cut to the truth of love.

No downers on here. It would have been nice. But not all of these songs deal with love, either, which is a relief. How about "Country Enough," which puts some drive in traditionalism? Or "My Mississippi," a reminiscent song of home still cherished? Or "Already Spent," about the money problems we have? There's "My Inlaws are Outlaws," which has a surprising amount of humor. "The WIngs of Mama's Prayers" is a bit too sentimental, but it fits the down-home mamma's boy image Bates seems to evict. And the title track tells us of America's heart, from a man who always finds "something to hate" about his heritage.

Those are really the best. The love songs (and, yes "The Love Song") provide another side of Bates. Take "Lovin Like That" and "Your Lovin Talks to Me," two rockin' songs that just avoid being sentimental mumbojumbo. There's "Long, Slow Kisses," as well, a tune that Conway Twitty would have been at home singing.

Bates' songwriting isn't something worth dying for, but it is an added bonus. Really, you gotta buy this CD for his voice: it is amazing how much the "Rainbow Man" resembles Twitty. But Jeff Bates stands on his own, as a new artist ready to hit it big in a market just aching for some traditional, down-home country music.

4.0 out of 5 stars The second coming of Conway?, May 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Rainbow Man (Audio CD)
From hearing Jeff's solid, if a little trite, first single "The Love Song", I thought his voice bore a strong resemblance to fellow (late) Mississippian Conway Twitty. After hearing his debut CD, I'd say it's more than a strong resemblance... it's an uncanny kinship, in voice and in subject matter. More than once, Jeff says 'darlin' or 'baby' in that old familiar way that Conway used to drive the women wild back in the day. Jeff's his own man, though, and his individuality and spirit shines through every song. The only negative I found about this album was the lack of variety... a heartbreaking ballad or a drinking song wouldn't have been out of place here, but they surely were missed. Despite the too rosy atmosphere of the record, it's worth the buy. The standouts are "Already Spent", a humorous take on the age old struggle to make ends meet; "I Want to Make You Cry", a song Conway would have killed for(!); and "The Wings of Mama's Prayers", a touching confessional. This is a strong debut for an artist with unlimited potential in the country market. The material could be a little stronger next time out, but he makes even the clunker lines sound good.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Wanna Make You Cry, May 23, 2003

Rainbow Man is an awesome album. Jeff Bates has an incredible voice. He's got that Conway Twitty sound going for him which in my opinion is the greatest compliment ever. Rainbow Man demonstrates not only his great voice but also his song writing ability. He's written/co-written every single song on this album. It's hard to pick a favorite song from this album because they're all simply great, but one that gets to me most besides "The Love Song" would be "I Wanna Make You Cry". I strongly urge everyone to pick up this album - you won't be disappointed!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Country Singer/Songwriter, May 23, 2003

The first song says all you need to know about this album. The first song, 'Country Enough', states 'if you ain't cryin or fallin in love, it ain't country enough'. This CD is all about true country love and hurtin' songs. My favorites are 'I wanna make you cry' and 'My mississippi'. The first will touch your heart like no other if you have ever or if you are in love. The second is the story about how Jeff Bates came to Nashville and how his home state is in his blood. The best thing about this album and Jeff Bates is his voice. His voice is a spitting image of Conway Twitty. In a couple of his songs, Bates references to Conway and his songs as an inspiration and hero. It is a great cd and it is a must for any country music fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rainbow Man, June 26, 2005
This review is from: Rainbow Man (Audio CD)
I would recommend this CD if you love Conway Twitty and Elvis. These two are my all time favorite singers. If these two had a child together it would be Jeff Bates. Jeff blends their two styles together and comes up with his own distinctive sound. I worship Jeff's Music after seeing him in Nashville and hearing "LONG SLOW KISSES." Jeff had me captivated from the first "HEY BABY." If you are lucky enough to see him in person you will be captivated by his music as well. I haven't listened to any other CD since. There isn't a bad song on this CD. Rainbow Man has upbeat tempo songs such as "Country Enough" and "My In-laws Are Outlaws" That are great to dance to as well as a few Sad intense songs such as "The Wings OF Mama's Prayer's" and "The Love Song." These two songs grabs the listener by the throat and makes you stop and reflect on your own life. You won't be disappointed if you buy this CD. I've bought three myself so I can take Jeff's music wherever I go, at home, on the road, or for a walk with my Walkman. Jeff Thank you for the best music a country fan could ask for. I'm proud to say I'm a Jeff Bates fan and love them "LONG SLOW KISSES"

If your into both Country music, you'll love Jeff's album. I got a chance to see him in concert twice in the same day and it was a blast.

Jeff has a voice that needs to be heard, but the radio stations seem to be stuck on playing Tim McGraw and a few others. They need to give some of these other guys a chance. Jeff has been slowly climbing the charts and is now in the Top 30 with his latest single; "Long Slow Kisses". Jeff has a life story that has to be heard to believe as well. But, he's lived it. Buy this CD and I don't think you'll be disappointed if you like Conway Twitty and Elvis because you can tell are inspirations to Jeff music style. Kenny (from Jeff's band) and Jeffwrote a song that Tracy Lawrence recorded called "What a Memory

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful !!!!!, April 27, 2004
This review is from: Rainbow Man (Audio CD)
I heard a tiny part of the end of Jeffs song- "I wanna make you cry" one afternoon. I couldn't believe the beautiful words....I could hardly wait to hear it again, so I called a radio station and asked who sang a song, something like I wanna make you cry???The d.j. didn't hesitate. Since that day I've listened intently, and his voice is so powerful....Puts me in mind of Conway Twittys' class.Great just Great....
