Over the spring and summer these are my main footwear. If you have high arches, the double layer Rainbows are the only way to go. As far as hemp vs leather; the leather ones have a more comfortable sole while the hemp have a more comfortable strap. The hemp ones also don't last quite as long, but are more sustainable. I really am stuck between the two, so I just switch every time I need a new pair.

I have had several pairs of rainbow sandals that have held up for years and have been worn on an almost daily bases. They have all held up great! However, the hemp rainbows started falling apart after only wearing them for two hours around the house. The layer of hemp frabic glued to the top of the flip flop started to peel away from the sandal. I was surprided and very disappointed. I'm returning them for a traditional leather pair.

I have been wearing Rainbows for over 10 years. I always got the full leather flippy-floppies but it rains a lot in the summer here and my foot slides in them too much when they get wet. The hemp are perfect for wet conditions because they keep my foot stable, as well as being super comfortable. Couldn't be happier.

I ordered these to replace my much worn and much loved of the same item. I had my old pair for 2 solid summers, and wore them nearly every day, hiking, gardening, socially. Great shoes!

I Love the hemp, they are great as they don't get slippery if you are walking around in the rain or in the creek :-)

Also for women with wider feet- I reccomend the mens, I find the womens are too narrow for my feet, (I'm a womens 9, and the mens medium fit perfect)

They arrived quickly, and I'm very happy with them.

This is my 3rd pair of Rainbow Sandals. It took 2 days of wearing them to break them in. Once broken in, they are extremely comfortable.

I will buy them again!

I have been buying Rainbow Sandals for 15 years. I started with leather and used them on dive boats while working as a deckhand. After a few wears the food bed became slippery causing my feet to occasionally slip out of the sandal. I know, I know flip flops are not ideal boat shoes, but when you have to be able to lose your shoes and throw on fins to assist divers in the water they worked best for me. Plus deck shoes get rank fast. Short story long... The hemp double stacks can take a drenching and perform while wet.

I also have the leather version of the double rainbow (xxl), yet I am surprised that I like the feel of the hemp much better. No "sticking" to it, sweating, etc. It isn't rough like I thought it would be. My feet like it. So, I plan to make these my keepers for indoor sandals, and wear out the leathers outdoors. I like two sets of sandals, one indoor, one outdoor. So, when the leather wears out, I would plan to not get leather, but hemp for both outdoor and indoor. Yet, I don't expect my hemp indoor versions to wear out over the next three years. We will see.

Enjoy, Patrick David

Great sandals! I've owned a few pairs of the hemp rainbows before but this is the first pair of the double padding. They are very comfortable. I wear a 10.5 so I ordered the XXL size 11-12, with the extra padding they seem to run a alittle small. But overall I'm very happy with them.

***UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE*** (08.18.2013): Ok folks, I may have been a bit harsh in my prior review (see below). Now that I've taken the time to break them in, I will proclaim my love for these guys. They are GREAT!!! They are well padded, without being squishy soft. They are stiff enough to provide support that most sandals don't have. They are no longer tight around the strap or scratchy around the toes. And I honestly have a tough time wearing anything else in my closet.
Of note to those who have foot pain: I've been dealing with plantar fasciitis and heel spurs for quite some time, and usually summer is my worst season due to the sandals I refuse to give up. This is the first summer that I haven't had to deal with heel pain!! These are NOT soft and squishy like less-expensive Reefs or drug-store thongs. They are well padded, but not so much that you're going to sink into them. They have adequate arch support in the double layer variety. However, they work so well, because they are stiffer than any sandal I've ever seen. You simply cannot bend the sandal end-to-end like you can with other brands. This stiffness provides support, and takes some of the strain off of your foot, thereby keeping the fascia relaxed and irritant free. I WHOLE-HEARTEDLY RECOMMEND THESE, OR ANY DOUBLE-LAYER RAINBOWS, IF YOU'RE A FOOT PAIN SUFFERER.

My last suggestion: If you get sweaty feet (me occasionally) or are in-and-out of the sandals frequently between episodes of barefooting it (guilty), I'd recommend getting one of the darker colors. At the time I placed my order, they didn't have my size in the brown, so I went with the white. Bad move. My feet pick up the color of the dirt and asphalt around my home, and have transferred it to the light colored sandals. Duh, I should have known better!! But just something to keep in mind when you place your order. And trust me, you'll want to place an order ASAP!!

***Original Review***

Ok, I usually wear a size 9 in mens shoes, so I ordered the sandals in medium. Unfortunately, the strap was so tight that I ended up sending them back and ordering a size Large. I knew going in (thanks to Amazon reviews) that the sandals had a rather long break-in period, so I wasn't expecting magic. However, I've worn the sandals pretty consistently now for 2 weeks, and the strap has yet to wear thoroughly. The piece that goes between your toes doesn't seem to want to fold over on itself and has definitely calloused the area between my first two toes. And the strap is still very tight, too.

However, I should note that I have what some might say is a "tall" foot, courtesy of a very high arch. In past summers, I've had to deal with nasty plantar fasciitis due to poor sandal fit/quality. But so far, I haven't had to deal with any heal pain at all!! These guys have an arch support built in, but more importantly, they aren't completely flexible like most sandals. This means that the sole offers more support than other sandals (looking at you, Reef). So, here's to hoping that the strap finally breaks in properly and I can wear them forever and ever. I will update the review as time goes on. Cheers.

The uncomfortable breaking in period (about a week) is well worth it. Great arch support, hemp stays relatively dry even on 90+ degree days, and the pillowy double stack padding made me a believer. Very pleased.
