5.0 out of 5 stars Many colors in this "Rainbow", June 4, 2000

Joe Sample's debut solo album from 1978, more than stands the test of time over the 20 years since it was first released. "Rainbow Seeker" features support from his Crusaders bandmates "Stix" Hooper, Wilton Felder, and bassist Robert "Pops" Popwell, but has it's own unique character apart from The Crusaders records. Every track on this album is great including "In All My Wildest Dreams", "There Are Many Stops Along The Way", "Melodies Of Love", and "Fly With The Wings Of Love". Sample has made other excellent albums, including the 1979 follow up "Carmel", but this one is one of the absolute best of the genre. A contemporary jazz masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST JAZZ ALBUMS OF ALL TIMES, May 15, 2000

I remember my pops use to play this all the time.. Coming up in a household where music was always played and with my father being a great jazz fan i have developed the taste for jazz over the years.. I have been looking for this album for some years on cd and finally just recently purchased it .. It still sounds great in 2000 as it did when it was release back in 78.. Joe Sample is an accomplish pianist, writer, producer accomplishments are plenty with working with the likes of Take 6, Lalah Hathaway, being a one time member of the great jazz fusion group the crusaders.. In 78 Mr Sample delivered what i do concern one of the best jazz albums in contemporary jazz from the opening track Rainbow Seeker it will have you hook.. In All My Wildest Dream.. which is my personal favorite track on the entire disc.. A few hip hoppers have sampled this great track 2 Pac, De La Soul , Arrested Development have used this tune at one time or another... Melodies of Love , another great track.. This song was redone last year on the Joe Sample/Lalah Hathaway CD .. On the latter mentioned the song had vocals added.. other noteworthy tracks.. Fly With The Wings Of Love, Islands In The Rain.. This is a must for all jazz fans to have in their collection..

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the BEST!, August 15, 2005

When this album originally came out, I had heard of Sample's work with the Crusaders and thought I would take a chance on his first 'solo' effort. I brought the LP up to the longhair at the cash register and he smiled and exclaimed: "That's a GREAT record!" Little did I know.....

Now 20 years later, this CD is still in constant rotation in my house and car. This IS the BEST of Joe Sample. Great writing and arranging. A great 'Road Trip' album. Pre "smooth-jazz" B.S. A perfect album.

A few of these tunes were remade on the album "Sample This". Nicely done, but the originals stick with me. Don't be afraid to buy this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST in ANY Jazz/R&B listener's collection, July 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Rainbow Seeker (Audio CD)
Joe Sample's Rainbow Seeker is my favorite of all of his solo albums. It has classic rhythms and melodies that perfectly blend, classical, jazz, rock, and r& b and latin music. The CD has never just sat on my shelf at home. I can listen to it and never get bored. "Fly With the Wings of Love" is my favorite track because it is timeless. It actually makes you feel like you're flying. I was five years old when this album first came out and made me a forever fan of Joe, and the Crusaders. Also, if you have never been to a Joe Sample/Crusaders concert, you are missing out. They give excellent live shows and interact well with the audience.

NOTE***For all of you younguns out there who listen to rap/hip-hop take note. Track two on this album, "In ALL MY WILDEST DREAMS", was sampled by TUPAC for "Dear MAMA". Once you know where the beats come from, then you can really enjoy/appreciate the art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oldie but goodie, June 19, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Rainbow Seeker (Audio CD)
This album was first issued on vinyl in the late 1970's, but I still listen to it with great enjoyment. Joe Sample is a wizard on the piano keys, as well as a respectable composer, and his playing here on both conventional and electronic keyboards is nothing short of marvelous. The tunes tend towards the upbeat -- no angst, just a little gentle melancholy -- but there's enough variety in moods and themes to keep the album from being too sunshiney. He's recorded half a dozen subsequent solo albums, besides his work with the Crusaders, but this one is still, in many ways, my favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it then, love it now, October 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rainbow Seeker (Audio CD)
At the time of its original release I was a young man in a foreign country just backing into jazz. As I hear it again now, the strength of Joe Samples mastery proves that it wasn't just the moment. The music was and is transcendental, his relationship with the keys leaps forth into the listeners aural spectrum with the feelings of an old friend, love it, love it, love it. Thanks for providing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Joe Sample classic!, September 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a import, a late 70's analog recording with a slightly better mastering than the US edition. Only slightly. This album is a classic, EVERY track is an excellent example of Joe Sample's signature improvisational style and keyboard lyricism. Just wish
there was a digital remastering of this fine album.
