5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Fans!, February 18, 2006
This review is from: Rainbow Takeaway (Audio CD)
If you like Kevin Ayers and have not heard these songs, you will be pleasantly surprised. This CD finds the beloved troubadour sharing his charismatic playfulness, but to better effect than some of his later works. There's not a bad song in the bunch, and most are truly great. As I returned to this album to write a review, it was like visiting an old friend. I had forgotten how clever and funny Rainbow Takeaway is. The most memorable tune is probably Beware of the Dog due to its funky reggae influence, and when I see the cover that's the song I hum. But so many of the other compositions here deserve some aural focus. For Ayers fans, Strange Song could be considered a signature tune. The rest of the songs have that unpretentiousness and foppish charm Kevin Ayers achieves when he is at his best. The only thing disappointing about this collection of tunes is its brevity.
